Godsmack appeared on the musical horizon with 1997 independent release All Wound Up. Complemented with powerful sound and lyrics, this debut earned them some regional following and a deal with Universal. The next year witnessed the re-release of their debut under the umbrella of Universal, with a handful of new tracks and new cover art to reach wider audience. This time, their heavy rock and sludge-like instrumental sound earned them huge listenership and two of their songs, Keep Away and Whatever, became instant hits.

Godsmack performance in Ozzfest tour further made them popular. Their album was eventually certified gold, selling more than 3 million copies till 1998. The group returned to Ozzfest in 2000 and also released their second album, Awake in the same year. This became a milestone in their career as they got both commercial and critical acclaim through this album. Released in the fall of 2000, Awake sold two million copies by March 2001. Not only that, the album also earned them their first Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. They got nominated for hit single Vampires while the title track became chart-topping number.

Alongside Grammy nomination, the year of 2002 also brought another feat for Godsmack. Their single, I Stand Alone, was chosen to be a part of Hollywood blockbuster The Scorpion King and it also became one of the most requested modern rock radio hits of the season. It also got nominated for Best Rock Song and Best Hard Rock Performance in the 2003 Grammy Awards. By then, Godsmack had already become a prominent music act not only in USA but also in the world music market.

High on the heels of their international success, Godsmack released their next album, Faceless, in 2003. The album repeated the same success and one of its singly, Straight Out of Line was nominated as Best Hard Rock Performance in 2004 Grammy Awards. This was followed by an all-acoustic album, The Other Side, containing beautiful renditions of their major hits as well as some new acoustic tracks. Even this time, the band surprised everyone by securing a relatively high position for an acoustic EP, as this album debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 charts.

Besides churning out hit album, Godsmack found great success on the road as well. They supported Metallica in their Madly in Anger World tour in 2004 and also played acoustic concerts in order to promote The Other Side. They ended the year with a splendid performance at Orlando's Hard Rock Cafe on New Year's Eve.

In times to come, Godsmack kept entertaining their fans with occasional doses of live music and also worked on new studio album. The album, simply titled IV, was released in 2006 and debuted right away at number one on Billboard charts. After its stupendous success, Godsmack celebrated their 10 years in the industry by issuing a greatest hits album, Good Times, Bad Times... Ten Years of Godsmack, in 2007. Their next studio album is slated for 2010 release while the band is performing in sell-out concerts all over the country.
