Ken Cowan was born in Thorold, Ontario, Canada. At an early age he started taking music classes and eventually decided to take up organ as his main instrument. After getting his basic music education from his native country, he went to study organ as well as music theory at the Curtis Institute of Music located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At this institute musician John Weaver was his classmate. After doing bachelors in music from Curtis, Cowan got admission at the world renowned Yale Institute of Sacred Music. From here Cowan graduated with a master degree in music as well as a diploma in arts. It was in this institute that Cowan has a chance to work with acclaimed artists like Thomas Murray.
Cowan has termed as one of the finest organ players in the US. He is loved both by fans as well as the critics for his speed, artistic style and above all his great music sense and imaginative programming. As a teacher he has worked as an associate at the Organist and Artist in Residence at St. Bartholomew Church in New York City, he was also Associate Professor at the West Minister Choir College at the Rider University in Princeton, NJ. Recently he has joined as head of organ program and associate professor of music at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University keyboard faculty.
Apart from teaching he continues to perform live at different cities in US, Canada and also travels to various countries in Asia and Europe. He is a member of American Guild of Organists and regularly performers at their events that are held in Minneapolis and Los Angeles. He has also been a regular participant at gatherings of Royal Canadian College of Organists and Organ Historical Society. Some of his solo recordings include Ken Cowan Plays Romantic, Works of Franz Liszt and Ken Cowan plays The Great Organ. Apart from solo albums he has collaborated on the famous classical album Double Concerto that was composed and recorded by Aaron Miller in Zurich, Switzerland with the Zurich Symphony Orchestra.
