Caetano Veloso is also a music composer, writer and activist. He was part of the 60's Tropicalismo music movement, which combined music with theatre and poetry. At the time, Brazil was ruled by a military dictator, and Veloso's music was both art and a form of activism.
Veloso went on to become a bestselling performing artist and composer in Brazil, and has gone on to reign supreme over the country's music industry. He has won nine Latin Grammy Awards and two Grammy Awards for his music, as well as the highly coveted Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year Award.
Caetano Veloso was born in Santo Amaro da Purificacao in the Brazilian state of Bahia. His family moved to Salvador soon after when he was a college student. He competed in a music contest held in the city and won it, following which, he signed with his first record label.
He went on to found the genre of Tropicalismo with a number of other artists, including his sister Maria Bethania. This group and its music were a form of political activism against the military dictatorship of the country, who viewed him as a threat, arresting him and Gilberto Gil in 1969. Veloso and Gil were then exiled and moved to London, where they stayed for two years.
In 1972, Veloso moved back to Brazil where he began recording music once again. He gained massive popularity in Brazil and outside of it, particularly in the eighties and nineties. His stay abroad resulted in a change of his music direction, and he experimented by merging international styles with Brazilian folk music. This brand of music was particularly loved in Africa, Israel, Portugal, Greece and France. In the US, the release of albums such as Estrangeiro also exposed him to a more mainstream audience. In 1993, he recorded the CD Tropicalia 2 with Gilberto Gil, in celebration of twenty five years of Tropicalismo.
The song Haiti from Tropicalia 2 gained a lot of acclaim, particularly because it contained important sociopolitical messages that addressed issues of ethnicity, homelessness and poverty. By the turn of the new millenium, Veloso had become one of the most prolific and respected pop stars in the world.
By 2004, he had recorded more than fifty albums, while his songs were used in famous movies like Pedro Almodovar's Frida and Hable Con Ella/Michelangelo Antonioni's Eros. He also performed live at the seventy fifth Academy Awards, playing one of his songs.
His first English album was also released in 2004. Titled A Foreign Sound, it contained covers of famous songs such as Nirvana's Come As You Are and songs from the Great American Songbook. The album also consisted of six of his songs, sung in English.
In 2006, Veloso recorded and released the album Ce, via Nonesuch Records. The album was critically acclaimed and he went on to bag two Latin Grammy Awards for Best Portuguese Song and Best Singer-Songwriter.
With eleven Grammy Awards to his names, Veloso has been dubbed as 'one of the greatest songwriters of the century' and one of the best artists in the world, right alongside names like Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and Bob Marley.
