Bon Iver was founded by Vernon in 2006 in Eau Claire Wisconsin and since then the group has remained pretty active on the indie folk music scene. Justin Vernon is the main member of Bon Iver along with three other musicians namely Michael Noyce (guitar and vocals), Sean Carey (vocals and drums) and Mathew McCaughan (bass guitar). Vernon came up with the idea of Bon Iver when he was spending winter months at a cabin of his father in the woods while he was recovering from an illness. Before this he was attached with a famous band The Rosebuds. While at the cabin he wrote and composed a few tracks and planned to send the demo tapes to various record labels but he was advised by his friends to release it on his won which he did.

The first album of Vernon as Bon Iver band was called For Emma, Forever Ago in 2008, this album was self released initially by him but later when it received excellent reviews from listeners Bon Iver was offered a contract by famous indie folk label Jagjaguwar Records and the album was re-released. This was loved by fans and it landed at #4 on US Indie Charts and earned Gold certification in countries like Australia, Denmark and UK. For Emma, Forever Ago was placed by Rolling Stone magazine on its list of Top 50 Albums of 2008 placed For Emma, Forever Ago at #29. Owing to the popularity of the album Bon Iver also performed a single Skinny Love live on Late Show with David Letterman. This single also appeared on famous TV series like Chuck and Grey's Anatomy.

In the year 2009 Bon Iver released an extended play album called Blood Bank. Bon Iver released its second studio album Bon Iver, Bon Iver in June 2011 under the same record label and this album got an overwhelming response. It raced to the #1 slot on US Top Rock Albums, US Indie Charts, US Alternative and Danish Charts. Apart from this it also landed at #2 on US Billboard and Australian Charts. Bon Iver has worked with Kanye West on his album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and also contributed the single Rosyln for New Moon Soundtrack in collaboration with St. Vincent. Bon Iver has performed at famous musical events like Bonnaroo music festival, Way Out West, Austin City Limits Music Festival and Sasquatch.
