Bell Biv DeVoe was a name of a very popular splinter group of New Edition, and it was comprised of a three members, Ricky Bell (a.k.a. Slick), Michael Bivins (Biv), and Ronnie DeVoe (R.D.).

Bell Biv DeVoe had actually been formed in the late 1980s, but it was not till the completion of the tour in support of Heart Break, when the three of them had really decided to make the break from New Edition official. They had made plans to get their own label and course, at the advice of producers like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

It is really very interesting to know that the debut album of Bell Biv Devoe's titled Poison had a number of producers, including Dr. Freeze and Spyderman, Wolf & Epic, Guy's Timmy Gatling, and Public Enemy's Hank Shocklee and Keith Shocklee.

It was obvious; Bell Biv DeVoe's first album Poison had a larger new jack swing composition as compared to New Edition releases. BBD had proved to be a pioneer in successfully combining hip-hop with R&B & pop.

Their CD was released in the year of 1990, and its title track became a #1 hit on the R&B chart. Poison had been sold over three million copies. The remix album WBBD-Bootcity! The Remixes, with the Wolf & Epic produced Word to the Mutha! as accompanying single, was released the next year and was certified gold.

Bell Biv Devoe had sold in excess of 4 million albums, prompting performances on the 1990 American Music Awards and other such ceremonies.

On the collective decision, Bivins had started to search for new talent and bring together the East Coast Family, discovering and producing debut albums for the groups for Another Bad Creation and Boyz II Men.

The second album, Hootie Mack, had been released in 1993 and spawned the singles Gangsta, Above the Rim, Something In Your Eyes and Show Me the Way.

Bell, Bivins, and DeVoe had participated in the reunion of New Edition in the year of 1996, and they had toured in support of the CD Home Again on the MCA record label.

Bell Biv DeVoe's had released its third album, B.B.D., in the year of 2002. This latest effort saw Bell Biv Devoe exploring a more, hardcore rap style/R&B approach. It received mixed reviews and not much commercial success.

Despite the fact, that Ronnie DeVoe has become a real estate agent in the Atlanta, but he is still a part of the New Edition. He is very particular about his eating habits, especially healthy eating, and is currently collaborating with the group Viking Pimps on their up-coming album.

In October of 2008, Bell, Biv, and Devoe were on the radio with V103 (Atlanta) where they had given a little information about their not yet finished track titled, That Girl .
