Founded in 1949 in Munich, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is an internationally reputed orchestra of Bavarian Radio. The first conductor of the orchestra was Eugen Jochum. Under his guidance, the orchestra's reputation developed quicker gaining critical acclaim everywhere. Jochum was succeeded by Rafael KubelĂk who held the position of principal conductor until 1979 and was followed by Colin Davis until 1992, Lorin Maazel until 2003 and Mariss Jansons afterwards. The orchestra made its initial recordings in 1950. Throughout the 1950s, it went on touring Europe and Great Britain, establishing itself as a prominent orchestra. Notable recordings of that era include Schoenberg's Gurrelieder and several of the Mahler symphonies. In 1960s, orchestra focused largely on romantic and classical works with a number of successful tours to Europe and America. In 1970s, the orchestra kept attracting leading conductors and musicians including Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, Leonard Bernstein and Bernard Haitink. In 1980s, orchestra toured Japan and North America and released critically acclaimed recordings of Beethoven's Fidelio and Mendelssohn symphonies. The tradition of recording many coral and vocal works continued including several Mahler works. The orchestra also participates regularly in Musica Viva concerts founded by Karl Amadeus Hartmann.
The primary concert venues for the orchestra are Herkulessaal of the Munich in the Residenz and the Philharmonie Munich am Gasteig. It presents numerous concerts every year in Munich as well as other parts of Germany and all around the world. It also participates regularly in music festivals and presents its recordings besides having broadcasts on Television and Radio. Its LPs and CDs has been appearing on a variety of labels over the years and are widely liked by fans and critics.
