Albita Rodríguez was born in Havana, Cuba in 1962 from parents who were well-known Cuban folk-music singers. She was exposed to the world of music from her very childhood and she gained recognition as a teenager singer. She released her first album Habrá Música Guajira (There Will be Guajira Music) in 1988 and Cantare in 1992. Her music back then was traditional Cuban country music backed by guitars and percussion. With these albums, she identified her music as a mixture of African and European music styles. In 1992, she moved to Columbia and performed in concerts of Latin America. She produced several hits including Hoy No Voy A Trabajar (Today I'm Not Going to Work).
Albita moved to Miami, United States in 1993 which opened a whole new dimension of music to her. She started her career from restaurant Centro Vasco where she was appreciated by musicians such as Madonna and Gloria Estefan who came to visit. She became an instant success releasing her first single Qué Manera de Quererte (What a Way of Loving You) and her album No Se Parece a Nada (Like Nothing Else) in 1995 which was commercially successful. Her music introduced Merengue, Salsa and other popular Latin rhythms.
Albita launched her CD Albita LLegó under her own label "Angel's Dawn Records" and won two Grammys in the category of Best Contemporary Tropical Album. All of her 8 albums released in the United States have been nominated for Grammy. She was also honored with Cuba's most significant award, La Orden de la Cultura Nacional de Cuba.
Albita has performed at four Presidential functions and she was the Queen of Carnival Calle Ocho in 2005, one of the largest Latino Festivals in the United States attended by more than one million people each year. Her powerful vocal phrasing does not require microphone to sing her operatic projections. She performs regularly with ballets and orchestras and sings annually at Miami City Ballet. Most of her songs reflect her life experiences and personal adventures.
Albita tours extensively throughout the Unites States and also to other parts of the world including Australia, Malaysia, Europe, Africa and Latin America. Besides her electrifying and captivating solo performances, she has also given combined performances with Willy Chirino, Phil Collins, Celia Cruz, Juan Luis Guerra, Tony Bennett, Miriam Makeba and many other notable artists.
Albita also contributes her time and energy doing various charity works. She has traveled from Mexico and Peru to Chile, Guatemala and Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco for her humanitarian work which includes cure and prevention of HIV and cancer. She participates in fundraising galas and is willing to go at lengths helping the sick and needy.
Albita chose her musical style with her homeland in mind and sings about traditions of Cuba attracting audiences from all around the world. She has received outstanding reviews and critical acclaim. According to Oakland Tribune, she "has a beautiful and powerful voice that allows you to look a strong stage presence" while Broadway News and Reviews wrote that her performance "is galvanizing and her expressive voice is full of Latin spirit". San Francisco Chronicle in 2008 wrote, she "projects safely in her role on stage, projecting authority right through the power of her voice". According to Kim Summers from All Music Guide, "Her music not only appeals to young listeners for its upbeat style but also to older audiences because of the messages her songs convey."
