Before the requisite members of Above & Beyond got together in 2001, Jono Grant along with Paavo Siljamäki was enrolled in the University of Westminster in order to pursue degrees in commercial music. They jointly set up the Anjunabeats record label and soon started hammering out volumes upon volumes laden with electronically processed tunes.
 
Anjunabeats Volume One attracted the attention of the titans of trance music, namely Pete Tong, Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold and Judge Jules. Jono and Paavo instantly started capitalizing on the success of their first electronic studio offering and then powered forward with their singles as well as remixes under the banners of 'Free State' and 'Dirt Devils.' However, it was after the duo teamed up with Tony McGuinness to work on remixing Chakra's track "Home" that Above & Beyond was spawned. Tony had previously been part of an indie cult band for 10 years that went by the name of Sad Lover & Giants and had been working as a Marketing Director & Manager at the Warner Music Group. However, the charm of his cushy job at the music manipulation company started to pale in comparison with the prospects of birthing a new electronic music phenomenon.  
 
Above & Beyond started advancing up the rank and file of the DJ brigade after the connections that Tony brought over from his stint at Warner Music started to materialize in the form of early hit remixes, such as Aurora's "Ordinary World", "The Sound of Goodbye" from Perpetous dreamer and Fragma's "Everytime You Need Me". However, it was with remixing Madonna's track "What It Feels Like for a Girl" that Above & Beyond started to get front row billing and their initiation into the electronic musical elite was complete. Above & Beyondalso launched their venture OceanLab early on, which initially began as a collaboration between the trippy trio and songstress Justine Suissa and then morphed to include Carrie Skipper, Richard Bedford, Ashley Tomberlin and the sultry sounding Zoë Johnston into its fold.
 
Though Above & Beyond's remixes of Tomcraft's "Loneliness" as well as Motorcycle's "As the Rush Comes" garnered significant acclaim, it was their original composition of "No One On Earth" featuring Zoë Johnston that catapulted them into the upper strata of the electronic-sphere when it was voted by listener's of Armin Van Buuren's A State of Trance radio show as being the "Tune of the Year" for 2004, They scored a double whammy with their track "Air For Life" that they produced with Andy Moor when it clinched the 2005 "Tune of the Year" vote as well as blowing down "Best Underground Dance Track" title at 2006's Miami Winter Music Conference, with "Good For Me" reprising the award the following year. 2007 saw Above & Beyond regulate the heart beats of a million revelers at Rio de Janeiro's Barra Beach with their own symphonic blasts. Their rise on the definite electronic music poll of Dj Mag has been epic, entering it at the 39th spot in 2004 and then rising to number 5 in 2010.
