Matthew Sweet
A man who knows well how to provide uninitiated music lovers with a perfect introduction to an altogether captivating body of work, Sydney Mathew Sweet causes his audience to feel a close bond with him. Mathew is that rare artist who seems directly and intimately knowable through his work.
Of the significant bands and artists to emerge in the 90s, Lincoln, Nebraska-born Mathew Sweet is the odd man out. He was born on October 6, 1964 and is characterized as a pop rock musician.
In 90s when cynicism and mean-spiritedness prevailed, Mathew afforded satisfied audience by expressing himself with penetrating honesty and the sheer joy of constructing something cool.
After graduating from high school in Nebraska, Mathew Sweet moved to Athens, Georgia. It is where he started his professional music career, both with his own band, called Buzz of Delight, and collaborating with Michael Stipe from R.E.M. in the group Community Trolls.
In 1985, Mathew was signed to his first recording contract with Columbia Records. Before getting the listening publics attention, he issued two widely acclaimed full-length albums. Sweet came up with his debut album entitled Inside in 1981. Despite positive reviews, the album was ignored upon its release and Columbia dropped Sweet.
In 1988, Mathew Sweet signed with A&M Records and recorded his second album, entitled Earth. Fred Maher-produced-Earth again featured Sweet as a one-man band, augmented by guitarists Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd. Earth, too, failed to make any impact, and A&M dropped Sweet in 1990.
Despite critical approval of his first two solo efforts, Mathew Sweet had anything but a smooth path to success. These albums, however, could not get off to earn him significant audience. That decade could not earn him more but just a status of being an unappreciated jangle pop guitarist as well as a solo artist. Sweet called its quits with A&M and signed a record deal with Zoo Entertainment.
Mathew Sweet emerged as the leading figure of the American power pop revival not before 1991. Zoo Entertainment issued the singer artists album called Girlfriend. The album spawned several singles including title track which turned out to be a huge success. Sweets Girlfriend conveniently managed to make a mark on the music charts.
Like his British counterparts Teenage Fanclub, he too adhered to traditional songcraft. But, he subverted the traditional songcraft by adding noisy post-punk guitar and flourishes of country-rock, producing an amalgam of the Beatles, Big Star, R.E.M., and Neil Young.
Recorded with guitarists Richard Lloyd and Robert Quine, Mathew weets Girlfriend became a word-of-mouth critical and commercial hit over the course of 1992. The albums title track reached the Top Five on the Modern Rock charts. The album was followed by the release of the decidedly less accessible Altered Beast.
In the latter half of 90s, an alternative rock was the dominant commercial force in rock & roll, Sweet was a popular concert attraction. His reputation as an alternative pop singer/songwriter was at its peak. He came up with Altered Beast in 1993 and a more pop-oriented 100% Fun in 1995. Both albums were critically acclaimed and relatively successful albums.
Making many year-end best-of lists, Mathews 100% Fun successfully managed to reach gold status on the strength of Sick of Myself. It proved to be Sweets first single to scrap the bottom reaches of the pop charts. Released in the spring of 1995, 100% Fun received the singers strongest reviews to date.
Sweet settled into cult status when he began with 1997s Blue Sky on Mars. Following 100 Fun, he parted ways with his band members: Lloyd and Quine, but retained OBrien for 1997s Blue Sky on Mars. The album spawned a strong single Where You Get Love.
Sweets Blue Sky on Mars, however, received mixed reviews upon its spring release and it fell short of expectations. Released in the following year was In Reverse and the year 2000 was welcomed with the best-of collection Time Capsule. In 2002, Sweet issued Hip-O released To Understand: The Early Recordings of Matthew Sweet.
In 2004, the singer artist returned to the domestic studio and began recording Living Things. It was followed by the release of a collection of choice covers with ex-Bangle Susanna Hoffs called Under the Covers, Vol. 1 in 2006.
Critics often hail Mathew Sweet, A man known for producing provocative and extremely personal albums. Negating this, Sweet has recently come up with his 10th full-length album entitled Sunshine Lies. Released in July of 2008, the album gives the artist and his fans a reason to get reacquainted.
