Los Enanitos Verdes is the incredible Latin rock album by the Argentinean band, Enanitos Verdes. The album is perhaps their most successful work to date and the band has often been associated with the name instead. Over the years, audiences have used the name of the album, interchangeable with the name of the band. The name literally translates into "Little Green Dwarves", but the group had originally intended it to mean "Little Green Men". In over the thirty five years that they have been active, the band has not stopped touring and performing all over the world. Los Enanitos Verdes tickets today are still bought with as much enthusiasm as they were when they first came out as a new act.
The band started with three people from a little city in Argentina called Mendoza. They came together in 1979 and gave a new tone to Latin music. While Latin music is usually associated with dance or festive undertones with certain kind of instrumentation, they began to break the stereotype and showcased that there is diversity in the kind of music played in Argentina. Rock was not something that one would link with the Latin part of the world right away. Thus they had the market wide open for them to explore. They captured the youth market who wanted a more contemporary sound. It is also what appeared to be missing in the nationwide commercial scene. Even though locally, underground bands and singers were showcasing many different forms of music, nothing had been brought to the forefront. Their success marked a new era in Argentinean music. Thus, in the late 1970s, Marciano Cantero decided to put together Daniel Piccolo, and Felipe Staiti and start Los Enanitos Verdes. Cantero took on the responsibility of being the lead vocalist, the bass player and the sometimes keyboard player. Felipe played the lead guitar and Piccolo played the drums. This is the lineup the band has continued to have till date.
They officially started to perform together as a proper band in 1984. They developed a marketing strategy in which they decided to promote themselves through word of mouth. This could only be achieved through excessive touring. Therefore, they started out on a voyage around their country, starting with Cuyo. They did not stop till they had performed in every single city throughout the region. Finally, they travelled to the capital city, Buenos Aires and decided to record a few of their original songs for they had no demos to present should they ever get the opportunity to be part of a record label. But unfortunately, the demos they recorded did not turn out to be good. They were largely unusable and the band disregarded them. These songs were never put out for the public or heard by anyone after that. Still, they did not let this experience bring them down and they carried on with their original plan-touring as much as they possibly could. They performed more shows in the larger cities, Buenos Aires and Mendoza.
By 1984, they decided to expand as a band and added new members. These were Tito Davila who became the permanent keyboard player and Sergio Embroni who played rhythms guitars and backed up the vocal. This was also the year when they published their signature work Los Enanitos Verdes. This album spawned a big rock hit, a song called "Aún sigo cantando" which translates into English as "I'm Still Singing". They faced another setback in 1985 when Embriono decided to leave the band.
