Schaumburg Flyers
The Schaumburg Flyers is a name of a Northern League baseball team, which is based in Schaumburg of Illinois. The Flyers are not affiliated with any Major League Baseball team. They usually play their home games at Alexian Field, which was known as Schaumburg Baseball Stadium at earlier times. The team was created in 1999 when the Thunder Bay of Ontario Whiskey Jacks were sold and moved to Schaumburg.
The team had hired their first manager, Ron Kittle in 1999. Kittle is very famous for his playing days with the White Sox, and former Cub Greg Hibbard was the pitching coach. In the early years of the franchise, Kittle had worked for a series of TV commercials to promote the team, using the gimmick of Ma Kittle.
The ads were able to generate a sense of interest for the team as the Flyers hoped to steal away fans from the nearby Kane County Cougars. At the end of the 2001 season, however, Kittle resigned from his managerial position, and Jim Boynewicz was hired to replace him.
The Flyers went to the Northern League Championship Series against the St. Paul Saints in the year of 2004. Although they had been leading the five-game series 2-1, Schaumburg eventually lost the series. In Game 5, Flyers relief pitcher Lyle Prempas allowed a game winning grand slam by St. Paul infielder Marc Mirizzi in the ninth inning. The Flyers have participated in the Northern League Playoffs for four times, but they have been failed to win the championship. There are some famous players, who have played for the Flyers are former Oakland A's outfielder Ozzie Canseco and former Chicago Cubs outfielder Dwight Smith. The actor who plays Leon in a Budweiser advertising campaign, Nigel Thatch, became a Flyer in 2005. This brought national attention to the Flyers, with mentions on ESPN's Pardon the Interruption and Sports Center.
The second half of the 2006 season saw the Flyers and MSN, being in partnership for being able to let fans choose the Flyers lineups online. The program was named as Fan Club: Reality Baseball.
Players and the team manager are upset by this development, and changes were advised by the online voting had seriously caused several on-field errors. There was a low attendance level and it continues on the declining phase even during the 2007 season. It is perhaps the one reason due to a dramatic weakening of Schaumburg's economy, which had a great rely on shopping and a rising real estate market. Shopping revenue has decreased drastically in the Woodfield area. Even there are d many homes in the area, which have lost close to 15% in value in a very recent times resulting in the current decline.
There is another reason as most of the team went with former manager Andy McCauley to the Kansas City T-Bones, which left only one player from the 2006 team to participate in the year of 2007. The Schaumburg Flyers have successfully worked on the plan of having a famous William Hung, who is an American Idol Star to sing at one of their games in 08 and on June 24 host dog day, where fans were allowed to bring their dogs to watch the game.
The whole of 2008 season offers lot of potential for the Flyers, who have already acquired many new players with some major league experience, such as Bo Hart who was a fan favorite in St.Louis when he batted well in the 2003 and in 2004 and played AAA ball with the Cubs farm team in Iowa.
