There aren't too many sports that beat Rugby when it comes to physicality, sheer strength and stamina. It is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world with players that are specifically drilled to come out on top in full fledged hard hitting game of Rugby. The sport has now grown to a level where millions of fans around the world buy Rugby tickets to watch these games live at the stadium.
Rugby originated from England in the early part of 1800s. The sport was looked after by a single governing body but as the century drew to a close some of the leading clubs broke free and formed their own version of Rugby known as Rugby League Football. These clubs wanted the game to be run professionally with the players getting compensated properly whereas the Rugby Union wanted it to stay amateur. This resulted in the sport being split into, as we see it now, between Rugby league and Rugby union.
Both styles of play have their own rules but the final intent is still the same, scoring a touchdown to put more points on the board than the opposition. The union style of Rugby is based on possession of the oval shaped ball where the opposition needs to snatch the ball from within the grasp of the team holding the ball within certain parameters. The league style of Rugby is totally different. It is faster and requires more stamina because for starters it is played between two teams with thirteen players on each side compared to fifteen in union Rugby.
The size of the field of play also varies in both versions but the length from one try line to the other is the same, hundred meters. In union style of play an advancing player can only be stopped by grabbing and bringing him to the ground, unlike league Rugby where defending players can use their shoulders to stop the advancing player. In league Rugby the six tackle rule applies where the defending team has to tackle the advancing team six times, within the rules, to gain possession. In league Rugby a team gets four points for a try, one for a drop goal and two points for a penalty goal whereas in union it is five for a try and three points each for both a drop and a penalty goal. The conversion is worth the same in both formats i-e two points.
Rugby is more than just a sport now, it is a global phenomenon. No matter which style of play suits you the objective still remains the same, winning by scoring a try. There are murmurs that a middle ground might be reached and the two styles might eventually come together which will be brilliant for the supporters and the sport itself. Whether that happens or not, one thing is for sure is that Rugby will remain an extremely popular and thrilling sport for many more years to come. You can watch the biggest Rugby championships by buying Rugby tickets and enjoying the best that the sport has to offer.
