Volleyball has been a part of the sports calendar for well over a century. Over the years, it has gone on to become an immensely popular sport. From NCAA to Olympics this wonderful sport has been watched by hundreds and thousands of fans around the globe. The new season is underway so book your Volleyball tickets and root for your favorite team live at the arena.
The history of volleyball dates back to 9th February, 1895. William G. Morgan was a physical education instructor at the YMCA and it was him who came up with a new sport and named it "Mintonette." It was an indoor sport that inherited facets from handball and tennis. The purpose was to invent a new sport which took less out of the players physically.
Morgan is also credited with writing the first rules of volleyball. The game was based on volleying to the other team's court. The first game was held in March, next year. It was an exhibition event and that is where Alfred Halstead saw it for the first time. He came up with the name volleyball and it didn't take the sport too long to make its way to other parts of the country.
Volleyball ventured out of U.S. boundaries for the first time at the turn of the next century when it began to be played in Canada. It began to be played in other countries not too long after that which resulted in the creation of the "Fédération Internationale de Volleyball" in the year 1947. The FIVB went to work and two years later the first ever volleyball world championships took place. The first women's world tournament was held three years later in 1952.
The formation of the FIVB and the world championships were historic occasions for more reasons than one as they brought the sport into the limelight for the first time on a global scale. Another turning point came in 1964 when volleyball made its way to the Olympics for the first time.
Volleyball is a played on collegiate level in the U.S. as well under the banner of the NCAA. The men's championships to determine the national champion were first held in 1970 for the first time. UCLA won the inaugural edition. NCAA held their first women championships eleven years later in the year 1981, a tournament where Southern California triumphed. Like all other sports at collegiate level, volleyball also provides the stage for young players to shine and make the grade to professional level.
Volleyball is a fascinating sport is now not only played in the U.S. but also in a lot of other countries in every corner of the planet. The fact it has been a regular at the Olympics just goes to show how highly it is regarded by everyone. Fans of the sport have always bought Volleyball tickets to support their teams and that trend will not be bucked this season as well.
