Major League Baseball Home Run Derby, or the MLB Home Run Derby is the contest amongst the dominant home run hitters in the Major League Baseball that verifies who can hit the largest number of home runs. The event is known as one of the most excellent traditions in the entire history of baseball, and is considered equivalent to the slam dunk contest of the National Basketball Association (NBA). It is an All Star Game event that has been exciting fans from ages now. It occurs on one of the two nights of the year when the players are not engaged in any other games of the four major sports, and the biggest stars of the game have the night all to themselves in which they boast their talent. The Home Run Derby is sponsored by State Farm Insurance, which is the largest automobile insurer in the entire United States of America.
The first Home Run Derby was added to the annual All-Star Game during the year of 1985, and it took place at the Metrodome in Minnesota, USA. From 1985 to 1990, the Home Run Derby had been planned as a two-inning event with every single contestant having five outs per inning. As of 1991, the Home Run Derby Champion was decided by selecting eight to ten players that participated in a three round contest. All players got 10 outs on each round, as they tried to hit as many home runs as they could. The top four, in spite of their league affiliation, have advanced to the second round. If there was a tie amongst players for advancement into Round 2, the player who would have made the largest part of regular season home runs at the All-Star break would proceed. If required, then the second tie breaker would be the distance of the longest home run made in Round One.
Featuring eight sluggers from eight different countries, that paid homage to the 2006 World Baseball Classic (the first international baseball tournament which included Major League players from the 25 man rosters of every Major League team), the 2005 Derby was the first "we are the world" long ball contest.
ESPN, in 1993, was the first to nationally televise the derby on a same-day delayed basis, with the first live telecast in 1998, and since 2009, three hours have been devoted to the event. The event of derby has delivered reliable and steady ratings for ESPN. It is noteworthy to point out here that the 2008 Derby was the year's most highly rated basic cable program. ESPN Radio also broadcasts the event on an annual basis.
Ever since 1985, many alterations have been made to this event in terms of the expansion of the events surrounding the game, and have included a number of skill competitions and exhibition games that make a weekend-long event out of the All-Star break. The fun and excitement of the event has never died down; instead, it has always seen to rise each year. Fans from all around the nation book their MLB Home Run Derby Tickets like mad! This year, as the 2010 event takes place in Anaheim, California at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, make sure you have booked your tickets too!
