The term golf is believed to have originated from a German word for "club". It has been hypothesized that golf is actually an acronym for gentlemen only, but these days, this myth is surely not followed.

That is the reason the U.S. has produced numerous professional golfers which have ruled the golf scene for years. The promotion of this healthy sport began at the end of the eighteenth century in United States, when formal tournaments were being organized by the, then, golf governing body of U. S. golf. As a result of this effort, the first U.S. Open Men's Championship was played on October 4, 1895 on a nine-hole course in Newport, Rhode Island. It was a thirty six-hole competition and was played in a single day. Ten professionals and one amateur entered.

In the United States, golf is the unofficial game of the business world. It is often said, in fact, that board meetings merely confirm decisions that are actually made on the golf course. For this reason, the successful conduct of business golf is considered a useful business skill and that is the reason that various schools, including prestigious universities have started both undergraduate and graduate-level courses that teach "business golf."
