Coppin State Eagles
Coppin State Eagles was established in 1900 as a training program, for African-American elementary school teachers. It was named the Fanny Jackson Coppin Normal School in 1926, in honor of an outstanding African-American educator.
The university moved to its present site in 1952, and, as Coppin State College, the first Bachelor of Arts degree was conferred in 1967. In 1988, Coppin State became part of what is now the University System of Maryland.
Association of Colleges and Schools
The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Maryland State Department of Education, the Maryland Board of Nurses, the National League for Nursing, the National Council on Social Work Education, and the Council on Rehabilitation Education accredit programs at the university of Coppin State Eagles.
Objective of the Coppin State University
The Objective of the Coppin State University is to provide a public, liberal arts institute that focuses primarily on the problems, needs and aspirations of the people of Baltimore's central city and its immediate metropolitan area.
Departments within the Coppin State University
Coppin State consists of various departments including the Division of Arts and Sciences, the Division of Education, the Division of Graduate Studies, the Honors Division and the Division of Nursing.
These divisions offer the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Education, and Master of Science.
Alternative Education
Coppin State offers non-traditional programs for non-traditional applicants. Options include web-based instruction, distance education, evening classes, summer school, off-campus programs and summer enrichment and certificate and training programs.
Campus
Coppin State is not a campus of large lecture halls and overcrowded classrooms. Most classes are relatively small with limited number of students.
Computer Resources
All classrooms are connected to the campus network and to the Internet. Several classrooms have computers at every seat. At Coppin State, education is imparted with the support of multi-media instruction. The university's residence halls provide network connections for every resident.

The University provides fall and spring semesters, winter session, and two summer sessions.
Accommodation Facilities
The university provides two new residence halls on-campus which cater for housing for more than 600 students.
Athletics
Coppin State participates in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I.
Men's varsity teams compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field. Women's teams compete in basketball, bowling, cross country, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball.
Activities within the Campus
Students participate in music, theater and dance groups; academic, professional and honor societies; varsity and intramural sports; service projects; fraternities and sororities; student government; and campus newspaper.
Financial Aid
More than 80 percent of Coppin State's students receive merit-based or need-based aid in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and work-study.
