College World Series
The College World Series is the culmination of the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship which determines the NCAA Division I college baseball champion.
The tournament takes place in June of each year. Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska has been the venue of the tournament since 1950. History:
The first College World Series was played in Kalamazoo, Mich in 1947. The Series was hosted again by Kalamazoo in 1948. The following year, the tournament was moved to Wichita, Kan. The Yale baseball team that played in the College World Series in Kalamazoo in 1948 was captained by the former President George Bush. In Omaha, the College World Series was first played in 1950. The crowd of 17,805 attended the first year Series in Omaha. In 2001, the total attendance was recorded 223,762 . There were average 22,830 baseball fans per game.
In the recent years, the College World Series has become a profitable event. However, for 10 of the first 12 years that it was in Omaha ? 1950-1961, the event saw loss of money. Only 1952 and 1954 showed a small net profit in those first 12 years between 1950 and 1961. Omaha corporations spent a total of $43,158 to subsidize those losing years.
During those "lean" years, the tournament's continued presence in Omaha owes much to four Omahans who maintained their faith and interest in the College World Series.They are the late Ed Pettis of the Brandeis Stores, the late Morris Jacobs and the late Byron Reed, both of Bozell & Jacobs, and the late Johnny Rosenblatt, Mayor of Omaha and an avid baseball fan.
Six times attendance records were set during the College World Series tournament in the '80s. The tournament became even more popular in 1990s. New attendance records were set in 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998 and 1999. Attendance increased from 95,406 in 1980 to a record 260,091 in 2003. The single-session attendance record was set in 2004 when the games between Texas (7) vs. Georgia (6) and Cal. St. Fullerton (3) vs. South Carolina (5) were attended by 28,216 people.
Television exposure has also great contributions in adding fans across the country for the College World Series. In 1980 with five games that year, the College World Series was covered by ESPN for the first time. Except the championship games, beginning in 1988, ESPN has been televising successfully the entire College World Series each year since 1982.
In 1991, the Creighton vs. Clemson game played on the first Saturday of the Series was given coverage by CBS.
The NCAA had to change the series format in 1988 to avail the opportunity to enter into a lucrative, over-the-air television contract. A definite date for the Championship game was wanted by the networks. Therefore, the College World Series switched from an eight-team, double-elimination championship to a two-division, eight-team tournament playing double elimination with the division winners meeting in a one-game Championship playoff.
The broadcast of the Championship game was stopped by CBS in 2002. The NCAA took the opportunity to consider other options. The NCAA Management Council voted for the best-of-three Championship game format change due to ESPN's exclusive coverage of the College World Series and its program flexibility.
In addition to the Championship games, Championship qualifying teams will be allowed by the new format to have at least one day off - possibly two - between the double-elimination portion of the tournament and the Championship series. The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) also has given their approval and support to the new format.The NCAA believes the new format is a good plan for teams and fans.
The 2006 College World Series took place June 16-22 with championship games June 24-26. Cal State Fullerton, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Oregon State, and Rice wre the participating teams. In the best-of-three final, Oregon State defeated North Carolina 2-1.
Montgomery, Alabama has been holding the Division II tournament since 1985. The Division III tournament has been held in Appleton, Wisconsin since 2000. A single-game championship is used by these divisions rather than the best-of-three series.
