The name The 39 Steps may not be alien to you. This masterpiece is based on a famous thriller novel by Scottish author John Buchan published in 1915 that was later adopted as an Alfred Hitchcock film in 1935.

This became one of best loved early British films of Alfred Hitchcock and everyone got inspired by its catchy storyline and power-packed performances. Then it was adapted for the stage and entertained the audiences there.

Adopted for stage by Patrick Barlow, The 39 Steps first opened in June 2005 at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds with a total cast of four actors.

Fiona Buffini directed this initial version starring Robert Whitelock, Lisa Jackson, Simon Gregor and Mark Hadfield. Next was London premiere at Tricycle Theatre with Rupert Degas, Charles Edwards, Simon Gregor and Catherine McCormack as leading cast.

In 2006, the play was transferred to the Criterion Theatre in London's West End in September 2006. A Spanish production was also opened in 2008 opened at Maravillas Theatre in Madrid. This Eduardo Bazo directed effort starred Gabino Diego, Jorge de Juan, Diego Molero and Patricia Conde in lead roles.

A super-hit phenomenon in UK, The 39 Steps has its United States premiere on September 19, 2007 at the Huntington Theatre, Boston. American Airlines Theatre started its previews on January 4, 2008 and the play opened officially on January 15, 2008 running till March 29, 2008.

Then the production was transferred to the Cort Theatre, and later, to Helen Hayes Theatre. Richard Hannay, Jennifer Ferrin, Arnie Burton and Cliff Saunders starred in this great play that re-wrote the history of success of American Theater.

The 39 Steps is a perfect example of well carted and well adopted theater. The production contains a good mix of juicy spy novel facilitated with a touch of Monty Python. Although a thriller, this play is full of laughter and entertainment. It tells the story of a boring man and spy woman.

Considering the honors and awards, the 39 Steps has won Tony and Drama Desk Award two times each. While the Tony Awards were for Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design, the Drama Desk acknowledged it as Unique Theatrical Experience and Outstanding Lighting Design. The play has also declared Best Comedy at the Olivier Award and the What's On Stage Award in 2007.

The 39 Steps is an out-and-out entertainer. It is more of a parody then a thrill, but it gives stick-to-seat kind of experience. For the beginning to the death-defying finale, the play grabs the attention of every present quietly remarkably.
