Broken Social Scene
Broken Social Scene are a Juno Award winning Canadian indie rock supergroup. Formed in 1999 by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, the group currently includes nineteen members who are currently playing in various other groups and solo projects.
The music produced by Broken Social Scene is characterized by a very large number of sounds, grand orchestrations featuring guitars, horns, woodwinds, and violins, unusual song structures.
Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, the core band members, released the band?s ambient debut album, Feel Good Lost, on Noise Factory Records in 2001. Later, they brought in a number of friends from the Toronto indie scene.
To flesh out their live show with lyrics and vocals, they brought in a number of friends from the Toronto such as Andrew Whiteman, Jason Collett, Leslie Feist, and Metric?s Emily Haines.
Over time, the band also included contributions from James Shaw, Evan Cranley, Justin Peroff, John Crossingham, Stars? Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan.
Broken Social Scene released their second album You Forgot It in People, winning the Alternative Album of the Year Juno Award in 2003. The album also included musical supporting contributions by Priddle, Jessica Moss, Brodie West, Susannah Brady and Ohad Benchetrit.
In 2003, the B-sides and remix collection Bee Hives was issued. The group released their third full-length, Broken Social Scene in 2005. A limited edition of EP, entitled E.P. To Be You And Me was also printed along with the album.
David Newfeld, who had produced Broken Social Scene?s albums, was listed as a band member for the first time. They showed up on Late Night with Conan O?Brien in 2006 performing ?7/4 (Shoreline)?.
At the 2006 Juno Awards, the group performed ?Ibi Dreams of Pavement? at the show. Their eponymous album won the Alternative Album of the Year award. Broken Social Scene?s song Lover?s Spit from 2002?s You Forgot It in People was featured in the movie called ?Lie with Me?.
The version of Lover?s Spit found on 2004?s Bee Hives record has also been featured in an episode of the third season of the FX series Nip/Tuck.
A single from ?You Forgot It in People? also used in the movie ?The Invisible?. The group has composed and recorded an original score for the Canadian film Snow Cake. They also scored the 2007 film adaptation of Maureen Medved?s novel, The Tracey Fragments.
Through the performance Broken Social Scene was joined by part-time members, and stars in their own right. Members were Leslie Feist, Amy Millan of Stars, k-os, and Emily Haines of Metric.
In late 2006, several members of the band appeared as special guests on the second album from Mexican indie band Chikita Violenta. The Stars and Suns Sessions was produced by Dave Newfeld. Broken Social Scene participated in the 2008 Siren Music Festival in Coney Island, Brooklyn.
It was reported in June 2007 that BSS founder Kevin Drew was recording a solo album. The album is entitled Broken Social Scene presents Kevin Drew, also featuring many other members of BSS including Ohad Benchetrit and Charles Spearin.
