Paul Simon
A man among 100 people who shape the world, Paul Simon is an American singer, musician and songwriter. He broke into the music industry with Art Garfunkel in the duo Simon & Garfunkel.
Acknowledging his works, the Brooklyn Academy of Music dedicated a week to Songs From the Capeman which were performed by the Spanish Harlem Orchestra and a cast of singers.
Paul Simon was born on October 13, 1941 in Newark, New Jersey. His father, Louis Simon was a college professor, dance bandleader and bass player. Paul Simon started off his musical career at Forest Hills High School with his friend Art Garfunkel.
The duo began singing together and would occasionally perform at school dances. Simon and Garfunkel signed to a record label who called them "Tom & Jerry". It was under this name that the two guys first had success. Craving rock and roll, the duo released the single "Hey, Schoolgirl" on Big Records in 1957.
The single managed to occupy 49th position on the pop charts while Simon and Garfunkel were still in their teens. From 1957 through 1964, Paul Simon wrote, recorded, and released more than thirty songs.
Also, occasionally reuniting with Garfunkel as Tom & Jerry, he came up with such songs as "Our Song", "Surrender, Please Surrender", and "That's My Story" among others. Songs recorded during that span of time were released on several minor record labels, like ABC-Paramount, Amy, Big, Ember, Hunt, King, Madison, and Tribute.
Paul Simon also joined a group called Tico and the Triumphs and enjoyed some moderate success in recording a few singles with them. A song called "Motorcycle" was released to positive reviews in 1962. The year also saw him releasing another hit single "The Lone Teen Ranger." Both chart songs were released on Amy Records.
Together with Art Garfunkel, Simon came up with a very popular album entitled Bridge over Troubled Water. However, after its release, Paul pursued solo projects. He released an album called Paul Simon in 1972. The album featured one of his first experiments with world music.
The following year, Paul Simon came up with There Goes Rhymin' Simon. The album contained such popular hit songs as "Kodachrome", "Something So Right", "Loves Me Like a Rock", and "American Tune". In 1975, Simon issued one of his finest works, titled "Still Crazy After All These Years".
It spawned a hit single "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." Over the next five years, Simon tried his hands on various projects. These included writing music for the film Shampoo and acting. He acted in a film called Annie Hall as Tony Lacey.
Paul Simon continues producing hits like "Slip Slidin' Away" and "Late in the Evening," while often appearing on a show called Saturday Night Live. Paul also did an album called The One Trick Pony with Warner Bros. Records. In 1981, Paul and Gerfunkel got together again for the sold out concert in Central Park.
The appearance was followed by a reunion album Hearts and Bones and a world tour. The album was released to critical acclaimed but it did not yield any hit singles.
The duo inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and received Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.
After touring biggest venues around the world, Paul Simon is all-set to embark on his 2009 Tour. Paul is sure to be coming to your City soon. So, make sure to grab your tickets to the hand clap feet tap events of Paul Simon before they run out!
