La Boheme
La boheme is a well-known opera. It is based on Scenes de la vie de Boheme created by Henri Murger. The world premiere of La boheme was held in Turin at the Teatro Regio [1896]. Arturo Toscanini conducted the performance. Toscanini also conducted a performance of it on U.S. radio [1956]. This was released on records and CD too.

Leoncavallo produced an opera with the same name. This was based on the same story too. However, he had his own libretto. Leoncavallo's La boheme premiered in 1897. It centered more on the Musetta and Marcello relationship. Leoncavallo's La boheme is rarely performed today. Puccini's opera remains a standard operatic repertoire.

Adaptations:
The opera received a Tony Award-winning Broadway production by Baz Luhrmann. This had modernized supertitle translations. This opera [La boheme] was updated to 1975, according to Baz Luhrmann, was because it was ...discovered that 1957 was a very, very accurate match for the social and economic realities of Paris in the 1840s.For playing the eight performances every week, 3 casts of Mimis and Rudolfos, and 2 Musettas and Marcellos, were rotated. This production was founded on Luhrmann's 1993 production for Opera Australia.Well-known adaptations of this opera include: A 1926 silent film (with a very different version of the opera). It was produced by MGM, and starred Lilian Gish as Mimi. A 1935 British sound film called 'Mimi', which starred Gertrude Lawrence and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. This one used the Puccini score just as background music. Sally Potter's film 'Thriller'. Boheemielamaa (La vie de boheme), Aki Kaurismaki's film. Certain aspects of Baz Luhrmann's film Moulin Rouge! RENT, the 1996 rock opera, and 2005 motion picture.

References made to the opera in popular culture:
One episode of the Animaniacs has the name La Bohemeth which has references to this and other operas. In Trading Places, Dan Aykroyd's character is a stereotypically snobbish. The character is booked, and the arresting officer logs the contents of his pockets: One pair of tickets: 'La Bo Heem', and Aykroyd corrects this with the correct pronunciation. In Heavenly Creatures, Sono andati is played by Kate Winslet. In the film Moonstruck, the music of La boheme is prominent. The music of La boheme is also prominent in John Cassavetes' A Woman Under the Influence. In the film Awakenings, Robin Williams plays a recording of O soave fanciulla through which tries and fails to attain a response from his catatonic patients. The musical Rent was founded on La boheme. In this variation, HIV/AIDS replaces consumption as the character's illness. Four of the show's characters are affected by the illness.

Turn of the Century [a song] by Yes has similar aspects with the Rodolfo/Mimi story. A sculptor in this says let clay transform thee so. In The Boondock Saints, the FBI detective Paul Smecker listens to Mi chiamano Mimi while he investigates the Boondock Saints. In Kate and Leopold, Kate's boss discusses La boheme at dinner with Leopold. There have been many more films in which this opera is mentioned too.
