Over the years, Volya has taken the meaning of 'freedom' to new levels by to pushing boundaries further than ever before. Volya has now transformed into a philosophy and a way of expression for the members of this Ukrainian dance ensemble. The group has been entertaining fans both nationally and internationally through their artistic excellence on the stage.
Volya currently operates under the leadership of it's Art Director Zhenia Bahri, During his tenure, the group has constantly raised the bar in terms of intricacy and artistry. Each performance by them is a lot more than just a live performance - it's an experience unlike any other.
The roots of Volya can be traced all the way back to 1989 when it came into existence under the watchful eyes of a handful of wonderful Ukrainian dancers. The founders of this not-for-profit organization had one aim in mind which was to lay the foundations of an idea and not just an ensemble. It was a radical concept that required quite lot of work and vision. It has worked spectacularly well.
The idea behind its creation, to portray the best of professionalism and technical superiority, remains the same to date. With only a handful of dancers, Volya took its art to various parts of the world and inspired many. Volya means freedom in Ukrainian and that is exactly what its dancers portray through their performances every time they take the stage.
Even though Volya's style and execution has evolved over the years, the idea of keeping the essence of traditional Ukrainian Dance alive has always been at the forefront. Volya has come a long way from staging simple Ukrainian folk dances to developing complex routines while keeping the traditionalism and vibrancy alive. Zhenia Bahri took charge of the ensemble as its Artistic Director back in 2000 and since then, Volya has grown to the point where they now have more than fifty dancers actively performing for live audiences. Bahri has always been a strong advocate of traditional Ukrainian dance since he himself has been a dancer for the most part of his career. Under his tenure, Volya's stature and popularity has reached new heights internationally. His knowledge, dedication and passion for Ukrainian dance have led the group to the unprecedented heights that it currently enjoys.
Volya has been able to communicate with audiences around the globe through the universal language of dance. Over the years, the ensemble has welcomed numerous other dancers and dance enthusiasts to perform with them.
The ensemble has travelled to different parts of the world as part of its tours. The group went on a Cross-Canada tour in 1997 and once again in 1998. In 2002, Volya crossed the North American border with a performance in the Salt Lake City followed by performances in Germany and Holland in 2003.
Since then, Volya has taken to the stage in Brazil, Italy, Portugal, New York, France, Turkey and many more places around the globe. The upcoming 25 Years of Volya will bring to stage some of the ensemble's most renowned pieces coupled with newly choreographed works.
