The narrative of the plot is encompassed around a Jewish family that resides in New York City on the Upper West Side for twenty years, starting from 1980 till 2000. They play that made its debut on Broadway in 2013 has received a total of three nominations of Tony Award which also includes the category for Best Play.
On the 17th of April, 2013 The Assembled Parties theatrical production successfully opened on Broadway at the prestigious Samuel J. Friedman Theatre that is located in a Manhattan Theatre Club. This show has been directed by Lynne Meadow and features Jessica Hecht in the character of Julie, Mark Blum as Mort, and Judith Light as Faye while Jonathan Walker as Ben. The beautiful costumes have been designed by Jane Greenwood and the set designs are by Santo Loquasto. The play has been scheduled to run for a short period of time, yet due to the response that it is getting from critics and audiences, the date has been extended to 7th July, 2013.
The story of the play starts off in 1980 when the Bascov family reunites for Christmas festivities. Although the family is Jewish, yet they do not practice their faith. Everyone gets together at the huge and rather luxurious apartment of Julie that is on the Upper West Side in New York. The character of Julie has previously been a teen movie star and now she is married to a rich man named Ben. Scotty who has just graduated from college and Timmy who is unwell due to flu are their sons and are present at the gathering. Faye, Ben's sister and her husband Mort with their daughter Shelly join the celebrations. Another character seen is Jeff who is Scotty's friend from school and has been invited over also.
After twenty years, in 2000, the family meets once more again at Christmas and at Julies place. Ben, Mort and Scotty have died by this time and Shelly seems to be highly estranged. Julie is down with a fatal illness, the character of Faye is not on medications anymore and Jeff has come back from Chicago after earning a rewarding law job. Tim is all grown up also who left college and is now employed in a restaurant.
The Assembled Parties is a play that is smart and very charming. A few scenes in the play are quite sad and impeccably spoken that as part of an audience you might just give up on a conversation. It seems as though it is a poem to certain class of woman. The genre of this play remains consistently frantic. You get to see that all the characters on stage have been humanly susceptible to wrong choices in life after 20 years due to the whims of fate and the basic passing of time. Apart from the Tony Award nominations, it has also received four Drama Desk Award nominations.
On the 23rd of April, 2013, The Assembled Parties original Broadway production was recognized to receive the honorable Drama League Award nominations in the category of Outstanding Production of a Broadway or off-Broadway play along with two nominations for Distinguished Performance Awards. On the 29th of April it received four nominations for the 58th Drama Desk Award.
