No holiday season is complete without a performance of the traditional Christmas season ballet, the Nutcracker. After its original premiere back in 1892, Nutcracker has since then become the most performed ballet in North America as well as the rest of the world during the Christmas season. Over the years, this two act ballet has been performed by numerous ballet companies from across the globe, and this coming season Ballet West will be staging it yet again in Salt Lake City's very own Capitol Theatre. Following the end of Ballet West's matinee performance of the Nutcracker, viewers are welcomed to join the Sugar Plum Fairy for the Sugar Plum Party. Specifically aimed towards the younger audience members, Sugar Plum Party will offer an opportunity to have a meet and greet session with Sugar Plum Fairy and her friends cookies, punch and more. So bring the Christmas spirit to your young ones with this holiday season ritual and grab Sugar Plum Party tickets today.
Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, Ballet West was formed back in 1963 by William F. Christensen. Today it boasts representing American classical ballet heritage to the rest of the world. Ballet West is lauded for its extremely talented artists and performers, due to which Ballet West is able to maintain a highly versatile repertoire. The Nutcracker is one of the earliest full length ballet productions that Christensen created, and still it remains to be a part of Ballet West's repertoire to date. Today, Ballet West is ranked among some of the nation's top few ballet companies that have also enjoyed international acclaim. Apart from that, the company also runs an academy to train aspiring dancers who later end up performing professionally alongside Ballet West or other major ballet companies around the world.
So far, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, and Adam Sklute is the fifth and most recent director who took charge of the position back in 2007. Previously, Sklute served as the associate director of the Joffrey Ballet as well as a dancer and ballet master. Under the tenure of Sklute, Ballet West has been able to further expand its repertoire by including the works of some of the modern day choreographers such as Jiri Kylian, Twyla Tharp and Ulysses Dove. While keeping the company's legacy of staging classical pieces alive, Sklute has also made additions of the works of the greats from the 20th century.
The evergreen production of Ballet West's Nutcracker will have the young audiences as well as adults get back in their Christmas spirit this coming season. Even though the original production of the Nutcracker didn't enjoy much of a success, the ballet rose to worldwide acclaim during the 60s and since then it has been a part of several ballet companies' repertoire.
The Nutcracker has become a Christmas season tradition especially in the United States, and a good number of ballet companies stage its live performances. Ballet West's interpretation of the show puts more stress on the second act as compared to the first one. The Land of Sweets sequence is a showcase of attention to detail that has been put in choreography and overall depiction of the act. Furthermore, Ballet West's production of the Nutcracker also features carefully designed costumers, sets and most importantly, choreography. The upcoming edition of Ballet West's Nutcracker and the following Sugar Plum Party is something that every child should witness during the holiday season. The show offers a magical experience that is fun and captivating for both young and older audiences. This year, as the Capitol Theatre hosts this show, come be a part of this evergreen Christmas season spectacle after the Sugar Plum Party tickets go on sale for general public.
