About the show:
There were high expectations from Something Rotten because of its renowned cast and production team, and the show has successfully come up to all of them. This musical comedy is set in the 1950s, and revolves around brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom, who desperately want to write a hit musical comedy. However, they are stuck in the shadow of a Renaissance playwright, who is known as "The Bard."
The brothers meet a fortune teller, who tells them that the future of theater would involve singing, dancing and acting at the same time. This inspires Nick and Nigel to write the world's very first musical. However, amidst the excitement of the Opening Night, Nigel and Nick realize that reaching the top would first require them to be true to their own self. To know how the story further unfolds, all you need to do is get hold of Something Rotten tickets soon.
A Feast for the Senses:
The director and choreographer of Something Rotten is Casey Nicholaw, who has also worked on Aladdin and The Book of Mormon. In the show, Nicholaw did not leave any stone unturned to make the dances look effortless and magical. The producer of the musical, Kevin McCollum, is a winner of three Tony Awards for "Best Musical" for the shows In The Heights, Avenue Q and Rent. His experience reflects in the show. The unique set design by Scott Pask is jaw dropping and adds to the overall magical effect of the show with its cartoonish touch. The costumes done by Gregg Barnes are eye catching and shine throughout the show.
The witty dialogues and sarcastic humor of Something Rotten makes it even more irresistible. The show celebrates, as well as makes fun of musicals of that era; parodying actors bursting into spontaneous songs, the cheeky chorus members on the stage and the cheesy tradition of the encore reprise. The songs in the musical are very hummable. Tracks like "Welcome to the Renaissance," "We see the light" and "Will Power" stay with you for a long time.
The Critics' Point of View:
Something Rotten received great critical and commercial reviews. The New York Times' Patrick Healy pointed out that the fact that this musical is not based on any book, film or jukebox song list is what makes it stand out. The New York Post hailed that the cast in the show have given the performance of their careers and have "brought the house down" with their acting. Ticket buyers would be happy to get their money's worth, according to the Deadline. The magazine also called it "a frivolous creampuff of a show that's two and a half hours of high calorie dessert." The Time Out New York called it "Broadway's funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years."
