Drury Lane Theatre aims to reach younger audiences, using education, entertainment and theatrical programming to inspire them. The Theatre for Young Adults stages classic productions as well as new works that feature all-star talent, spectacular sets and costumes. With Sleeping Beauty - Theatrical Production, the group will bring the beloved tale to stage that is directed by Tammy Mader. Robin and Mader's unique take on the plot will shatter stereotypes and bring a forth many quests.
Set in a fictional, far off kingdom, a vindictive sorceress called Magenta, places a curse on Princess Amber. The curse puts the beautiful princess in deep sleep and it can only be broken if she receives a kiss from her one true love. Enters Prince Hunter, who will do anything for his love and sets out to free her. Thrill and excitement is added to the plot as Prince Hunter sails the dark sea, climbs mountains and fights a dragon to save his princess. Tammy Mader and Marc Robin have created a twist in the story by introducing Princess Amber as tomboy. In her magical kingdom called Colorland, she climbs trees, defends her prince charming from dragons and is always looking for adventure. She eventually succumbs to the powers of the wicked witch and in the end it's up to her prince to rescue her.
In Colorland everyone is named after a color, which includes the fairy godmothers Ruby, Marigold and Periwinkle. The set is also colorful and costumes dramatic, creating a brilliant impact. With the help of a soaring music album, the production is well paced and doesn't drag. The first half of the show focuses on Amber and her rather unconventional personality. The time frame for her sleep spell has been reduced to an afternoon and during this time the focus comes on Prince Hunter. Targeting children of different ages - boys and girls - while the first half excites the girls with Amber's antics, the second half is a treat for the lads. They sit in awe and watch Hunter overcome various obstacles to reach his slumbering princess.
Sleeping Beauty - Theatrical Production keeps things interesting and engaging as the performance ends with a question/answer session and the cast is introduced to the audience. The creative team also steps onto the stage to take queries and even tell the inquisitive young minds how they managed the special effects.
