The now billionaire woman had humble beginnings. Oprah does not come from an affluent family. Instead she was born to a single teenage mother in a rural Mississippi neighborhood and faced hardships during her childhood. She lived with her grandmother and then moved to Milwaukee at the age of six years, to live with her mother. At the age of fourteen she gave birth to a son who died in infancy and Oprah moved to Tennessee to live with her father, who made her education a priority and led Oprah to become an honor student and a prize winner for her dramatic recitation and oratory.
While still at high school, Oprah Winfrey landed a job in radio and became a co-anchor at the local evening news by her late teens. In 1976, Oprah moved to Baltimore and began hosting a TV chat show, called 'People Are Talking'. The show successfully continued for eight years and then Winfrey started hosting her morning show by a Chicago TV station. Soon she pushed the previously third-rated Chicago talk show to the first place, and then launched her own production company. Oprah's success with the TV show earned her nationwide popularity and also landed her a role in Steven Spielberg's film, 'The Color Purple', in 1985. Oprah was later nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the film.
In 1986, Oprah Winfrey launched her self-titled show. It began with an audience of ten million on 120 channels. The 'Oprah Winfrey Show' grossed $125 million after its first year and earned Oprah thirty million dollars of them. Soon after, she gained ownership of the program and drew it under the control of her own production company she had created a decade ago. By the mid-nineties Oprah had restructured her show. She also decided to keep it free of tabloid topics.
Side by side, Oprah Winfrey also had other projects going, including her acting endeavors and 'Oprah's Book Club'. O: The Oprah Magazine, her highly successful monthly also debuted in 2000. By now her TV talk show had also become popular in more than a hundred countries across the globe.
By the turn of the 2000's decade, Oprah Winfrey had launched her own network as a joint venture with the Disney Communications. In January 2013, the Oprah Winfrey Network began to make headlines when it aired an interview between Oprah and Lance Armstrong. Oprah Winfrey's charitable works are as noteworthy as her other achievements. Her Angel Network has raised above fifty-one million dollars for charitable programs, including relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina and girls' education in South Africa.
