The Odd Couple is another masterpiece from the genius many regard as the greatest humorous writer America has produced, Neil Simon. He has over thirty plays and an almost identical number of movies to his credit. He was born in New York during the time of Great Depression of the 1920's. His inspiration to write comedy came from watching the legendary Charlie Chaplin. That led to him writing plays and movies which in turn brought his way multiple awards and accolades. His first play was Come Blow Your Horn in 1961 and he never looked back after that.
The Odd Couple was Neil's third play. The story of the play revolves around two roommates of totally different personalities. Oscar Madison is rich and divorced who lives in an eight room apartment in Manhattan. He is a slob who is not into neatness. He is dirty and throws a game of poker at his place regularly for his friends. One of those player-friends is Felix Ungar who is clean and puts lot of emphasis on hygiene, in short he is Oscar's exact opposite. One evening Felix come to the poker game late and informs everyone that he has been kicked out of the house by his wife with nowhere to go. Oscar invited him to share the apartment with him and that is when it gets really interesting. Whereas Oscar is happy and easy going, Felix is sad and withdrawn because of his marital situation. The house is now clean and spotless and the friends at the regular poker game are served with clean food in clean utensils. All this neatness starts to get to Oscar's head and drives him crazy. Oscar decides to invite their neighbors the British Pigeon sisters for dinner but Felix, because of his love for his wife, refuses to be a part of the plan. After a lot of convincing Felix finally agrees so when the sisters come to the apartment that is when the fireworks really kick-off.
The Odd Couple made its debut on 10th March, 1965 at the Plymouth Theatre on Broadway. The play became a huge hit from the moment the curtain was raised for the first time and had fans and critics raving about it. It was then moved to the magnificent Eugene O'Neill Theatre where it played until its closure on 2nd July, 1967. That two year run had nine hundred and sixty six performances and two previews. On top of that it won multiple Tony awards to solidify its status as a true magnum opus of theatrical folk lore. The success of the play has paved the way for revivals and its re-incarnation in the form of a female version. It has also been converted into TV serials and a pretty successful movie.
The Odd Couple has been a source of joy and humor for over four and a half sensational decades. The awards it has won the revivals it has seen along with its conversions into TV serials and movies show how highly it has been rated since it first graced the stage all those years ago. The best part is that this hilarious extravaganza is ready to take center stage once again. It doesn't matter if you have seen it before or not, make sure you buy The Odd Couple tickets and catch it live one more time for this promises to be a one-of-a-kind experience.
