Le nozze di Figaro is the short form of 'Le nozze di Figaro ossia la folle giornata', which means The Marriage of Figaro or the Day of Madness. This is an opera buffa (a comic opera) that was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart [1786]. It was composed with Italian libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte. This operawa founded on the concept from a stage comedy Le mariage de Figaro by Pierre Beaumarchais [1784].

Though the play by Beaumarchais was at originally banned in Vienna [due to satirization of the aristocracy], it emerged as one of Mozart's most successful works. In those days, there was little tolerance of art that reflected the political climate. Even the slightest inclination towards such representations could have severe consequences for a work of art or its creators. Therefore, people in those days had to be careful of what they produced and performed in public. The music is particularly famous, and is played as a concert piece too. This opera takes place in Seville, Spain. It is now considered to be a cornerstone of the typical operatic repertoire. It stands at number 5 on Opera America's list of the 20 most-played operas in the U.S.

History:
The opera was the primary one of several celebrated pieces between Mozart and da Ponte. The two proceeded to create Don Giovanni and Cosi fan tutte. Mozart purchased a copy of Beaumarchais's play to da Ponte, and converted it into a libretto in six weeks time. He translated the story into Italian poetry, and removed all political aspects.Opposed to the popular myth, the libretto was accepted by the Emperor, Joseph II, much before any music was written by Mozart. Figaro was performed at the Burgtheater, Vienna, on May 1, 1786. It was hugely popular, but only had 9 performances.

The Emperor is believed to have introduced a law regarding the number of encores that could be sung at Figaro performances. This was in response to audience demands made in opera that was as 4 hours long. This was due to the song repetitions. A Vienna revival production in 1789 saw W.A. Mozart substituted both arias of Susanna with new compositions. These were more appropriate for the then singer of Susanna, Adriana Ferrarese del Bene.

Music:
A phrase taken from The Marriage of Figaro, [Cosi fan tutte le belle], was introduced in the overture to Cosi fan tutte. Figaro's Act One finale aria, Non piu andrai, is introduced as the march of the Coldstream Guards. This is mentioned in the second act of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni. Mozart recycled or transposed the music of the Agnus Dei of his Kronungsmesse KV317 (Coronation Mass).

It was originally in F major, but he changed it to C major. This music is produced with two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two timpani, two sections of violins, violas, cellos, and basses. Such combinations and organization of sound could onlybe handled by a musician of Mozart's genius.
