The fundamental plot for the musical comes directly from the movie. Ghost the Musical is a romantic supernatural fantasy that explores the age old topic of eternal and undying love. A couple Sam and Molly, deeply in love, encounter an unfortunate accident. Sam is murdered but his spirit is not able to find rest as it is trapped in limbo. Sam's ghost is unable to move beyond the bond he had with Molly; especially since Sam's ghost discovers that her life is in danger. Sam desperately tries to somehow affect and guide and Molly's as he tries protecting her from the impending danger.
It is a widespread impression that musicals that are derived from hit movies are seldom able live up to the hype and expectations. The director, Matthew Warchus has worked closely in collaborating with his production designer Jon Driscoll, and has managed to avoid such a pitfall. Ghost the Musical has been injected skillfully with the rhythm and flow of a movie. The show achieves this by ensuring precise set and costumes designs. Rob Howell has crafted elaborate costumes and representative of the frenzy that is the Manhattan Street. Moreover, like a movie the show is a visual and auditory treat. Loaded with its superior lighting and sound the intricate choreography by Ashley Walle finds solace on stage and in the watchful eye of theatergoers.
Ghost the Musical proves itself a masterpiece that has bettered the original movie in one respect. The movie expresses the ghost's love for Molly in various scenes via metaphysical contact. These scenes have since become iconic. However since the musical was designed and written under different parameters and constraints, Sam's character falls back to romantic singing to express the same emotions. It is indeed a difficult task that is expertly accomplished via the very intimate Molly by Caissie Levy and the passionate I Make You Scrambled Eggs. The quality of the music score doesn't end here. Ghost the Musical features more romantic songs; especially ones by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard are truly romantic and memorable.
The show's arsenal is the performance and personality of Sharon D Clarke. She has an astonishingly deep voice and the most compelling demeanor. Her strong presence has impacted all dimensions of Ghost the Musical. The sights and sounds as whole reach heightened finesse with Are You a Believer?, an emotional center piece of the show. She has become the heart and soul of this show drenching Ghost the Musical in emotion and romanticism from the bottom up.
Ghost the Musical also carries the sophistication and detail of the production design. Paul Kieve is responsible for the special effects and illusions. His work is astoundingly original and innovative. Some of the best examples are the impressions of New York City's concrete jungle. The visual illusions that convince the viewer that Sam the ghost is walking through walls is awe inspiring. Perhaps the most potent visual effect is Sam's ascent to the heaven. It will no doubt will leave many a viewers teary eyed.
