Not even the slightest joke gets lost in translation, from French to English, when Marie embarks on a tale of patriotism, love and long lost family. The genre defined as opera-comique, keeps audiences intrigued through the two acts, making them sympathize with the unmaterialistic Marie. The tuneful spectacle makes for an interesting watch and the Daughter of the Regiments tickets should be bought without any second thought.
It is written by Domenico Gaetano Maria Donizetti, the Itlian composer from Bergamo, Lombardy. He has done works in Italian and in French. Some noticeable names include L'elisir d'amore, La favorite and La fille du regiment.
La fille du regiment or the daughter of the regiment first took stage on 11th February, 1840 in Paris. The opening night could be described as a nightmare. It was almost a disaster. Being an opera, music held the utmost importance but the lead tenor failed to hit the right notes and was frequently off pitch. An esteemed French tenor Gilbert Duprez, commented on the opera saying "I myself saw the unsuccess, almost the collapse, of La fille du regiment"
However, even with the rough start, the play steadily continued to gain popularity and soon reached its thousandth performance. It was also translated, from French, into other languages such as Italian and English to be screened outside France. Although even in Italy, the opening nights did not fare well with lackluster reception. It gradually caught on with the audience. It was in the year 1902 that the Metropolitan Opera hosted the first performance of The Daughter of the Regiment.
The story is set into motion when the Marquise of Berkenfeld is crossing over the Tyrolean mountains, to get to Austria. The sergeant of the 21st regiment, Sulipce is introduced and he assures everyone to restore peace after a skirmish between French troops. The protagonist is then introduced, Marie who is an orphan left at a battlefield, adopted by the regiment. She has feelings for a local Tyrolean Tonio, yet cannot marry him as Sergeant Sulipce has ordered her to marry from within the regiment.
The marquise lays claim to the tomboyish girl, saying she is the lost daughter of her sister. As a result she takes responsibility of giving Marie proper upbringing. The plot unrolls to more startling developments and Marie has to choose between passion or privilege.
Daughter of the regiment has seen many adaptations. From screening at the San Diego opera house to the metropolitan opera, the opera has seen many changes as seen fit by the directors. Sometimes the audience is left pleasantly surprised when they come to see an 1840's opera, yet are faced with a jubilant fast paced, action packed portrayal. Slow motion and matrix like effects, to depict the war, add to the hilarious experience. The raucous laughter often drowns the music and the band has to patiently wait for laughter to die down.
If the costumes fit the time settings in which it is staged, the tenors hit the right notes and the band operates with the fluidity of a well-oiled machine, making it a must watch for all opera lovers.
The story of the abandoned infant girl who was left there by her mother to avoid shame, has the right blend of humor and singing. Marie is found and raised to unladylike young adulthood by a group of French soldiers. The love plot is tossed into a musical patriotic mixture, with the final outcome so refined that it makes Donizetti's work stand apart. As it is said seeing is believing, so get your Daughter of the Regiment tickets and see the great work of art.
In an excerpt of Donizetti's poem from when he was fourteen, he wrote ".People will say to me, "Bravo maestro!"" decades later. He has been able to accomplish just that.
