Curtains
This summer, Ahmanson Theatre Los Angeles is brining for an exciting new musical Curtains, a musical comedy murder mystery with music given by John Kander and lyrics by the late Fred Ebb and a book by Tony Award-winner Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Remember WENN).
The show will be presented by the Centre theatre group, starting from mid-July till mid- September, though dates would be announced soon. Scott Ellis, director of the rink steel pier, also a kander and ebb musical, will direct this show as well, starring David Hyde Pierce (Spamalot, Frasier) as Frank Cioffi, a detective who sings songs when not solving crimes His performance adds great comedic moments to the show and really does do a implausibly well and also, Debra Monk as the leading female star.
Set in Boston in 1959, this suspense-filled play focuses on murder of the show?s leading lady, who strangely, drops dead onstage while bowing in front of an applauding audience. The detective, a big theatre-fan, conducts his investigation of the unfortunate incident, while the rehearsals continue and soon he finds himself in a chaotic and even more unconventional situation, more murders and a promising love-affair.
Holmes tailored the idea of his book from Tony-award winning Peter Stone?s work, who departed from this world in 2003 followed by lyricist Fred Ebb in 2004. Work on Curtains has continued since then, and the show would be the first Kander and Ebb musical to premiere on Broadway since the beloved lyricist's demise. Other credits to the hit show Curtains include Rupert Holmes for the book and Choreography by Rob Ashford.
John Kander and Fred Ebb's songwriting venture is recognized as the most thriving and long-lasting partnerships in Broadway's history. Together they wrote Flora, the Red Menace, Cabaret (their first major hit), The Happy Time, Zorba, 70, Girls, 70, Chicago, The Act, Woman of the Year, The Rink, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Steel Pier, also the visit, presented at Broadway theatre Chicago. They also worked for films and TV which includes New York, New York, Funny Lady and Liza with a Z.
