A Theatrical Masterpiece

Anastasia is the musical masterpiece by the Academy Award nominated composer Stephen Flaherty and the Golden Globe nominated lyricist Lynn Ahrens. The book of Anastasia is written by the multi-time Tony and Drama Desk Award winning librettist, screenwriter and playwright Terrence McNally. This show is based on the 1997 Hollywood film of the same name which was directed and produced by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. The flick turned out to be a major hit and garnered a couple of Academy Award nominations including one for 'Best Music, Original Musical or Comedy Score.'

The Plot

The story of Anastasia is about a young amnesiac orphan named Anya. The musical transports the audience from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s and focuses the tale on Anya who embarks on an epic journey to uncover the mysteries that are shadowing her past. While on her path, she is followed by a Soviet officer who wishes to silence her. However, she is soon accompanied by a stunning ex-aristocrat and a dashing conman who helps her find love, home and family.

Debut

The initial reading of Anastasia was held in 2012 following which a workshop was conducted after three years in New York City. It included Douglas Sills as Vlad, Ramin Karimloo as Gleb Vaganov and Elena Shaddow as Anya. Also, a few minor changes were made to the musical like for instance, a new role was added.

Anatasia made its debut at the Hartford Stage in Hartford, Connecticut on May 13, 2016. Directed by Darko Tresnjak, the musical starred Christy Altomare as Anya and Derek Klena as Dmitry. The show immediately became a hit and even went on to win multiple Connecticut Critics Circle Awards including one for 'Outstanding Production of a Musical.'

Broadway Production

Anatasia premiered on Broadway on March 23, 2017. The show took place at the Broadhurst Theatre where it successfully ran for 808 performances before it was concluded on March 31, 2019. This production of the show saw Christy Altomare and Derek Klena reprising their roles as Anya and Dmitry respectively. The show won a Drama Desk Award for, 'Outstanding Production Design' and was also praised by different publications.

In North America
