A major junior hockey team in the Western Hockey League namely ?The Spokane Chiefs' plays in the based out of Spokane, Washington and its home games at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, usually having spectators around 10,471. They have almost similar uniforms such as those of the NHL's Montreal Canadians. Spokane ranks at the top or nearly is among the top considered team of the WHL and Canadian Hockey Leagues in attendance.The Spokane Chiefs franchise was granted in 1982 to Kelowna, British Columbia as the Kelowna Wings and shifted to Spokane in 1985.

The Chiefs won the Memorial Cup and President's Cup in 1991, and have won two division titles, and three Western Conference titles. The Chiefs and Portland Winter Hawks are the only two U.S. division teams to be the victor of the Memorial Cup. The Chiefs are also the only team in the history of the Western Hockey League to come back from a 0-3 shortfall to win a best-of-seven series, which took place in 1996 in their match against Portland.In 1991, during the Memorial Cup, the team comprised of future NHL players Ray Whitney, Pat Falloon, Trevor Kidd, Jon Klemm, and Scott Bailey. This team made the Memorial Cup Tournament a tremendous show, scoring a goal in the first couple of minutes of virtually every game.In 1995, was again a time of enormity for the Chiefs - the team's first year in the Spokane Arena. The Arena hosted many unforgettable events during that year, and saw the Chiefs win 50 games and advance to the WHL finals, only to lose in five games to the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Just after two years took place the 1998 Memorial Cup which was hosted by the Chiefs, and were one goal away from moving into the final game to take on WHL rival Portland. But ultimately victory wasn't in their fate. Still, Spokane set an attendance record for the Memorial Cup. In 1999, head coach Mike Babcock guided the team from a last place finish earlier, to a first place, 47 win season. The Chiefs advanced to play the Kootenay Ice in the WHL finals, but lost in six games.

Since 2001, the Chiefs aren't having the best time and are struggling to attain the top position. The organization has had three head coaches in five years; Perry Ganchar (resigned), Al Conroy (fired), and current coach Bill Peters, but yet, the team needs a lot of guidance. Nonetheless, Spokane fans have not given up on their support for the team. The Chiefs has around an average of 6,000-7,000 fans in each of its games - one of the top figures in the Western Hockey League. Chiefs fans are recognized for the vigorous support- and a goal celebration frequently called the 'best in junior hockey.' In 1999, the fans were named the best in the WHL.

The 2006-2007 season saw the Chiefs return to the playoffs for the first time in two years. They fell four games to two versus the CHL's top-ranked team, the Everett Silvertips. During the summer of '07, the Chiefs announced Head Coach Bill Peters' team option for a third year had been picked up. Also in the offseason, Asst. Coach Steve Pleau left the team to become the Head Coach of the newest WHL franchise, the Edmonton Oil Kings.With their first pick in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft, the Chiefs selected left-winger Michael Betz.
