Bowling Green Falcons are different sports teams that play for Bowling Green State University. Simply called Falcons, the teams participate in NCAA Division I and in the Mid-American Conference and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
BGSU is one of only 13 universities in the country offering NCAA Division I FBS football, Division I men's and women's basketball, and Division I hockey. The university venture in different sports for both men and women including hockey, football, basketball, baseball, cross country, swimming and gymnastics.
The Falcons have a long successful history in Hockey. The team has won NCAA National Championship in 1984 Falcons. They clinched the championship from University of Minnesota Duluth in the longest college hockey championship game in history.
The hockey team has provided the school with the greatest number of notable athletes. Ken Morrow and Mark Wells have made the Falcons proud when they participated in Miracle on Ice and captured the 1980 Winter Olympics gold medal.
Rob Blake also captured a gold medal for his country in the 2002 Winter Olympics. George McPhee and Brian Holzinger were given the Hobey Baker award in 1982 and 1995 respectively.
The Falcons' Basketball graph is also worth appreciating. They have shown a consistent and improved performance in recent years and won three consecutive conference championships in women's basketball in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
Bowling Green Falcons men's basketball team is also a popular NCAA Division I college basketball team that compete in the Mid-American Conference.
Football is as much craze among the Falcon as rest of the Americans. The Falcons football team represents Bowling Green State University in NCAA football and competes as a member of the Mid-American Conference in the East Division.
The team played their home games in Doyt Perry Stadium in Bowling Green, Ohio under the coaching of Gregg Brandon.
The Falcons have won ten conference championships. In the 2007 season, Falcons made their 89th season of play. The Falcons finished the season 8-5 overall and has finished 4-2 in the MAC East. They also participated in the GMAC Bowl and capped the season by beating arch rival Toledo for the first time in 3 years.
Many Falcon players have become a household name for football fans. Omar Jacobs is one of them who set the NCAA record for TD to INT rate, at 41 touchdowns to 4 interceptions in 2004.Don Nehlen is perhaps one of the more memorable Falcon football players and coaches.
He played quarterback for BG and also coached the Falcons for nine seasons from 1968-1976. He joined the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005. Doyt Perry is another Hall of Fame coach from Falcons.
He served the team from 1955 through 1964. The university's football stadium ?Doyt Perry Stadium' honors his contributions to the team. The stadium was opened in 1966 and has a capacity of 23,724 crowd.
The Falcons had many interesting rivalries but Rockets of the University of Toledo are considered as their main rivals in almost every sport that both universities play. Their games are remembered as the most heated and exciting ones in University sports history.
The most well-known of these games is the Battle of I-75. This football game is held each year and the winner takes home the Peace Pipe, an American Indian peace pipe placed upon a wood tablet.
The Bowling Green State University has produced legends in different games. Amongst the most memorable is NBA legend Nate Thurmond who is named among the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History.
The university also was the collegiate home to one of the NBA's first ever draft picks, Chuck Share. Current NBA players Antonio Daniels and Keith McLeod also played at BGSU.
The University leaves no stone unturned to facilitate the Falcons in order to improve their game. Besides the exuberant Doyt Perry Stadium, Anderson Arena is used to hold Men's and women's basketball games while the hockey team played inside the BGSU Ice Arena.
Warren E. Steller Field is the home of BGSU's baseball team while the Sebo Athletic Center is a new facility located behind the northern end zone at Doyt Perry Stadium. The facility was opened in 2007 and houses training facilities and offices for the athletic department.
Falcons' fanatics also give their support to the team wherever they play. The Bowling Green Dance team performs at many BGSU sporting events. Known for their high-energy, spirited performances, the dance team cheers the Falcons to and boosts their morale.
