Waterloo Black Hawks
Waterloo Black Hawks first started off as a Semi Professional Ice hockey Team in 1962 and played in United States Hockey League (USHL). USHL, it self was formed a year before the formation of the club.
Presently Black Hawks are a Tier I Junior team and play their home games at Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa. As the team was founded in 1962, it played its home games at the McElroy Auditorium and took a successful start of their career as they played in USHL.
Black Hawks went on their Championship winning streak in 1964, and kept on winning the championship till 1968. 1968-69 was the last season that the team played before they took a break for one year and later became Iowa Stars in affiliation with Minnesota North Stars.
As Iowa Stars they finished their 1969-70 season with a 35-26-11 record, and Omaha took the lead as well as the League Championship with difference of one point.
The following year, the team renamed itself back to Black Hawks. A year later the Iowa Stars moved to Cleveland as the USHL suffered financial losses.
As the dawn of the 70?s set in, it bring more success to Stars, as they claimed three more championship titles in 1975, 1978 and 1979.
It was in 1979 when the team along with USHL made its return in 1979, and won another Southern Division title in their 1979-80 season as they returned to junior hockey.
The following season the team was relocated to Dubuque, under the leadership of team?s head coach Jack Barzee, and became the Fight Saints. As the Waterloo was deprived of its hockey team, Hennepin Nordiques relocated to Waterloo.
Although Waterloo got its Black Hawks back, but unlike the previous team, their success wasn?t immediate and the team struggled in its initial years in Waterloo.
Scott Mikesch was appointed the new head coach of the team, but following the losses suffered by the team, he stepped down as the coach of the team, and after him 8 coaches came and went.
Since the formation of new Black Hawks, the team didn?t have a winning season until 1980, when the team got its first Southern Division title.
The winning season was later followed by the downfall of the team as they weren?t able to score a winning season until 1993-94 season.
Although it wasn?t expected due to the team?s performance, but still several players from Black Hawks roster went on to play in major league games during the 90?s. Some of those players include, Jason Blake, Chris and Peter Ferraro.
1995 marked a major change in the club?s history as the team moved to Young Arena from their old home ground that was McElroy Auditorium.
The things started getting better for the team as the ownership of the club was transferred to Butch Johnson, but those things didn?t included team?s performance, as the team kept on having losing seasons.
The records of the team did started getting a bit better than before after the team got its new head coach, Scott Pionk.
