Virginia Tech Hokies officially represent the college sports teams of Virginia Tech. The teams take part in the Division I Atlantic Coast Conference of the NCAA, in as many as nineteen varsity sports.Virginia Tech Hokies men's teams play sports such as football, baseball, golf, basketball, cross country, soccer, wrestling, swimming & diving, track & field as well as tennis. There women's teams also take part in various sports which include lacrosse, basketball, soccer, cross country, swimming & diving, track & field, tennis and softball. They were given the name Virginia Tech Hokies since the time the name of the college was changed to 'Virginia Agriculture and Mechanical College and Polytechnic' from Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. It was chosen via a 'yell contest', which took place in order to pick out and decide a new name for the sports teams. The yell which was selected was "Hokie" in 1896, created by a man named O.M. Stull.

Virginia Tech Hokies authorized school uniform colours, Burnt Orange and Chicago Maroon, were also established in the year 1896. The mascot of the team is a character resembling a turkey and is known as the 'Hokie Bird'. A very stylized abbreviation of Virginia Tech, the VT, is used as an emblem of the athletic teams of the university. The teams also have a fight song, 'Tech Triumph', which was written especially for them in 1919 and still continues to be used. This song is mostly played during the sports events by Virginia Tech's two bands, 'The Marching Virginians' and the 'Hightly Tighties'.

Virginia Tech Hokies established a rivalry with the Virginia Military Institute during its earlier years. The football teams of the two colleges started playing annual game titled, "Military Classic of the South". It took place every year on the Thanksgiving Day in Virginia, until 1970. Now the Virginia Tech's football team has become very competitive and has other major rivals, such as the West Virginia Mountaineers, the Miami Hurricanes and the Virginia Cavaliers.

Virginia Tech Hokies have been taking part in the Atlantic Coast Conference since 2003 and have also been a part of the Southern Conference, which they left in 1965 to become independent. Then, in the year 1978, the teams tied up with the Metro Conference and in the first year, their men's team went on to win the basketball championship. They were later on ousted from the Metro Conference as well. When they became a part of the ACC, in their first year they won the football championship.

The team, although having won several championships, including bass fishing, field events and individual tracks, has never ever been able to achieve a national title. Virginia Tech Hokies football team won the Commonwealth Cup once and their softball team has taken part in six conference championships, winning in 2007. They have also had immense success in bass fishing, women's soccer team, golf, ice hockey and baseball as well as women's and men's basketball.
