The Tacoma Rainiers is a unique name for minor league baseball team, which plays in the Pacific Coast League. They are the AAA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. It is in the town of Tacoma since 1960. It has been in the PCL, the longest current active streak of membership in the league.
Tacoma's history tells us that it had joined PCL as the Tacoma Tigers, in 1904. It had relocation from Sacramento after the 1903 season. The Tigers had won the first PCL pennant, by finishing first in both halves of the split season schedule.
They got a chance to win first-half championship in 1905, but at later played so badly in the second half that they were forced to move back to Sacramento. Their name was declared as the Sacramento Solons, and losing the postseason series to the Angels. The PCL had not returned to Tacoma for another 55 years.
The present franchise was incepted in the year of 1960, it was the time when the Phoenix Giants, being the affiliates of the San Francisco Giants had moved to Tacoma and became the Tacoma Giants. The Giants has decided to move the team back to Phoenix in the year of 1965.
The team had switched over to different names for 19 years like the Tacoma Cubs Tacoma Twins, and Tacoma Yankees. The team had become associated with the nearby Seattle Mariners in 1995, whose AAA team for the previous ten seasons had been the Calgary Cannons.
Tacoma had added the Rainiers name as a tribute to the Seattle Rainiers minor league teams that played in Seattle from 1938-1964 in the PCL. The Tacoma Rainiers usually play their home games at Cheney Stadium. Oakland Athletics power hitters Mark McGwire, Jos? Canseco and Jason Giambi played for the Tacoma Tigers on their way to baseball stardom.
The Rainiers were sold to the Dallas-based Schlegel Sports Group in 1996, giving pop star Nick Lachey a one-third stake in the team. The field of the Cheney Stadium is maintained perfectly on a daily basis, in the clubhouse.
Before and after each game, a staff of professional trainers has a routine to see that you are taped, iced, and ready to play. Every evening there is a hang out activity with 'Hendu' and the pros, and learn more about them than you ever did by reading the sports pages.
The first team to play at brand-new Cheney Stadium, the Giants marked the return of Pacific Coast League baseball to Tacoma. Juan Marichal, who is expected to be a future Hall of Fame star had pitched a shutout in the first Giants win at Cheney Stadium, But in actual, it was the 1961 Giants the brought the first championship to the city.
The Giants continued to play in Tacoma through the 1965 season, when San Francisco Giants owner Horace Stoneham announced that he was moving his affiliate to Phoenix for 1966.
But the Chicago Cubs stepped in and arranged to send their prospects to Tacoma the following year. Later the team had a very great stay and formed a history at the home ground and at other places.
