The history of the franchise goes all the way back to 1992 when it was formed by the name of Hamilton Canucks, and started their play as the affiliates of Vancouver Canucks of NHL. After playing its first two seasons in Hamilton, Ontario; the team then relocated to New York back in 1994. The team's relocation to New York turned out to be pretty successful. The name of the team was changed to Crunch and soon it became one of the most popular franchises in AHL and also broke league attendance records during its 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. Even after the relocation to New York, the team still remained an affiliate of Canucks up until 2000 after which it switched to Columbus Blue Jackets. Crunch remained Blue Jackets' affiliate for ten years and after that Crunch spent two years in affiliation with Anaheim Ducks.

Afterwards the team finally signed a long term affiliation deal with Tampa Bay Lightning, which has been effective ever since 2012-13 season. Following the new affiliation, the team made it to the Calder Cup Finals in 2013, but wasn't fortunate enough to actually win the Championship. The team also holds a bitter rivalry with Rochester Americans, and is known for being a fight franchise within the league.

In the history of the American Hockey League, Crunch played the very first outdoor game which took place in Syracuse at the New York State Fairgrounds. The game was called the Mirabito Outdoor Classic, in that Syracuse Crunch went up against Binghamton Senators. Crunch won the game in front of the 21,508 hockey fans that were present there in person.
