University of South Alabama has one of the best college sports programs, with a history that dates back to 1964. In total the university competes in seventeen varsity sports and collectively these athletes are called South Alabama Jaguars. Fondly known by the fans as Jaguars, they play in the Division I of NCAA, under the Sun Belt Conference. The 'Lady Jaguars' represent the university in nine different sports, whereas the men's teams sum up to eight. Before 2009, the Jaguars had yet to represent USA in football but that too changed when football program was developed in the fall of the year. The Jaguars football team played its first game against Hargrave Military Academy, who they defeated quite convincingly with 30-13 score. This historic match was witnessed by over 26,000 spectators. In their premier season they made their presence known by remaining undefeated at 7-0. They followed with success in the next season as well, and in 2010 again remained unbeatable at 10-0. Jaguars' baseball team is considered a powerhouse with their record eleven Sun Belt Championship wins. Under the coaching of Steve Kittrell, who is serving his 25^th year with the team, the South Alabama Jaguars have produced several athletes who have managed to go pro. These include, Adam Lind who plays for Toronto Blue Jays, Juan Pierre - Outfielder for Philadelphia Phillies and David Freese, Third-Baseman for St. Louis Cardinals, among many others.
 
The basketball team has won five conference championships and is 8-time regular conference season champion. Mitchell Center serves as their home base and its above 10,000 accommodation has often been sold out. 'Jaguar' is the mascot of team and it's a person adorning costume with head formed of paper mache, camouflaged using spotted fur. He is present at all the important games of South Alabama Jaguars.
