Peoria Chiefs
The Peoria Chiefs is one of the Class A minor league baseball teams, which are affiliated with the Chicago Cubs, They are located in Peoria of Illinois. They play for the Midwest League. It was formed in the year of 1983.

It happened, when a team named as the Peoria Suns, a California Angels farm team had replaced the Angels' previous Midwest League farm team, the Danville Suns. The team had been given the name Chiefs, with a reference to the Peoria tribe for which the city was named.

Peoria has always been famous for the contribution in the history of professional baseball. There were some of the earlier teams like the Peoria Reds, the Peoria Canaries and the Peoria Blackbirds, who played in several early leagues during parts of 1878-1895. The first ballpark used by the early teams was reportedly called Sylvan Park.

The Chiefs' used to play at the Meinen Field near the Bradley University campus at first. The place was, built in 1968 and renovated before the 1992 season and renamed Pete Vonachen Stadium in honor of the Chiefs' owner. Later, the team had moved to a new park in downtown Peoria in the year of 2002.

The place is called O'Brien Field; here they have set a franchise attendance record of 254,407 in the new park's first year and also won the mid west league championship. The team could not keep the same status till 2005, as having 256,612 fans in their first season back with the Chicago Cubs since 1994.

There are so many famous players including Wally Joyner, Devon White, Mark McLemore, Mark Grace, Greg Maddux, Joe Girardi, Pl?cido Polanco, Coco Crisp and many more, who had played for the team at different intervals of time. Ever a former Chicago Cubs catcher Jody Davis managed the team during the 2006 season before moving to the Single A Daytona Cubs.

There was an announcement made on December 5, 2006 that former Cub and hall of famer Ryne Sandberg would manage the Chiefs in 2007. The Chiefs had broken their season attendance record with 259,794 fans and an average of 3800 per game. Sandberg has returned to manage the Chiefs in 2008 with hitting coach, Ricardo Medina and pitching coach, Rich Bombard.

The Peoria Chiefs has celebrated the 25th Anniversary by a vote of its fans via the website and in-store balloting at local Circle K stores and also by a vote of current and former Peoria Chiefs employees. The team was announced in July 2007 and the players were featured in a Baseball Card Set. The players range from Wally Joyner.

In the first year of O'Brien Field, the Peoria Chiefs won a franchise record 85 games and had the best home record in team history with a 47-24 mark in the regular season. The Chiefs won their first ever first-half championship and then won their first ever Midwest League Championship with a 7-1 (4-0 home) march through the playoffs.
