The athletic team from Springfield, Missouri was formed in 1908. Representing the Missouri State University the Bears are in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision. Missouri State Bears comprises of various teams which play a selection of sports including diving, volleyball, field hockey, football, golf, soccer, swimming and baseball. Bears are represented by both male and female athletes and play as a part of the Missouri Valley Conference for most of their teams.

The Lacrosse team forming in 2003 is relatively new but has made its presence felt. Winners of GRLC championship the team has so far participated in GRLC Tournament MVP's, All-Americans, GRLC Division II Coach's of the Year and All-Conference players. Lacrosse team of the Bears forms part of the MCLA Division II in the GRLC.
