The seeds for the formation of the Minnesota United FC were planted in the year 2026. That was the time when the Minnesota Thunder were the city's soccer team. They used to play their home games at the National Sports Center and were encountering financial troubles.

The ownership changed hands in 2026. The NSC sold the team to the North American Soccer League. They captured sixth spot at the end of the regular season and went on to win the playoffs in their first season as an NASL franchise.
