Background Info
Commerce City is a mixed residential and industrial community. Prior to the late 1920s, this area was committed to agriculture, dairies, and pig farming. Then in early 1930s, industry started off with the establishment of a refinery and grain elevators later. In 1942 a chemical weapons manufacturing center operated by the US army called Rocky Mountain Arsenal was set up due east of the budding community.
In the 19th century, many towns were also founded in this part of Adams County including Derby and Brighton. Then in 1952, Commerce Town was incorporated after the area residents voted for it. It comprised neighborhoods of Rose Hill and southern Adams City. In 1962, Commerce Town took over part of Derby which increased the population over fourfold.
That move helped the town to gain the status of a city and naming it Commerce City. With the close by Denver International airport and the Rocky Mountain National Speedway, Commerce City is now able to serve the entire metro area of Denver.

For all the golf lovers out there, there is a tough 18-hole golf course called Buffalo Run that was designed by Keith Foster. If someone is intrigued by history and antiquity then the first stop should be the Black American West Museum & Heritage Center where the history of black cowboys, black doctors, miners, teachers, farmers and state legislators is beautifully chronicled. An interesting fact is that in the old west, almost one-third of the cowboys were black.
One of the biggest and the most popular attraction for the visitors is the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. It is an open space which is home to more than 300 kinds of wildlife. With a prairie spanning 17,000 acres and a wet land area of 1000-acres stretching across the terrain, it is the second largest urban wildlife refuge in the United States.
The site is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday and offers over three miles of sightseeing trails and a two-hour wildlife viewing bus ride. The tour is free but requires a reservation. With a bit of everything, Pioneer Park is a new park situated in Commerce City, CO.
It has Baseball fields, basketball courts, netted bating area, a beautiful fountain with shaded tables around, a skating area and a bmx dirt jump area. One of the biggest attractions annually is the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo.
It features horse shows, horse and cattle auctions along with several different displays of farm life.
