It is the proud winner of Minnesota State NCAA Division II, national women's basketball championship for the season the 2008-09.

When it comes to ice hockey, the Mavericks are known for their great play and talented players. They play under the leadership of Mike Hastings who is the serving head coach and the third coach of the team. Troy Jutting remained with the team since 2000 till 2012 and has taken the team to some major wins. For his remarkable performance Jutting was termed as the WCHA Coach of the Year two times, for the year 2003 and 2008. Before him, Don Brose served as the coach of the team who assumed the head coaching responsibilities for three long decades from 1970 to 2007.

Minnesota State Mankato has produced some fine players over the course of time and some of the big names who later played in NHL are Ryan Carter, Steve Wagner ,David Backes, Tim Jackman, Grant Stevenson and Jon Kalinski. Ryan Carter a former Maverick made the university proud when his name was engraved into the Stanley Cup and David Backes also went on to achieve the silver medal in the 20102 Olympics representing the men's US Olympics team.
