Race was first shown on Broadway on the 6th of December, 2009. It was met with great reviews, both from the audience as well as the critics. It was performed at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, New York, New York City. The first version of the play had a star studded cast, which included Richard Thomas, Kerry Washington, David Alan Grier, and Emmy Award winner James Spader. Tony Award winner Santo Loquastro is the scenic designer of the play, with Tom Broecker being the costume designer. The lighting design has been created by Brian MacDevitt, who is also a Tony Award winner.
The previews of Race were started on the 16th of November, 2009. These were done to prepare for the opening on the 6th of December at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The play kept running for two hundred and ninety seven shows, and finally closed on the 21st of August of the next year. It also received a Tony nomination, when David Alan Grier got nominated for the Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play at the Tony Awards the same year. The director of the play, David Mamet is a well known American film director, screen writer, essayist and playwright. He has written several plays and films and is considered to be among the leading writers of the industry.
The story of Race revolves around three lawyers. One of them is a white man, while the other two are black. They are given an opportunity to fight a case to defend a man, who has been arrested for committing a crime against a black lady. The tale gets extremely interesting and exciting as the three lawyers, along with the charged man fight the case. The cast includes renowned actors Richard Thomas as Charles Strickland, Eddie Izzard in the role of Jack Lawson, Dennis Haysbert as Henry Brown and Afton C. Williamson playing Susan.
