 In 1934, the first inaugural Augusta National Invitation tournament was held at the new golf course and was won by Horton Smith. Owing to the popularity of Jones the event attracted big golf players and helped in establishing its reputation as a major event.

Jack Nicklaus is one name that shines in the Masters Golf history as he has the credit of winning the tournament six times.  Other popular names who are also multiple winners include Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, Jimmy Demaret, Sam Snead, Gary Player, Nick Faldo and Phil Mickelson.

The tournament is remembered for some great players and moments and also for its numerous unique traditions that add to the appeal of the tournament. Each year the winner is given a green jacket which he has to return the next year after his victory is taken over by some other player. The jacket represents the membership for the club for a year. This tradition started in 1949, when it was given to Sam Sneed and continues till date.

In 1954, the tradition for giving crystals to players for their achievements was started. Jack Nicklaus has the privilege of having a record of 61 pieces of such crystals. Another tradition is that of the Masters Championship dinner which is held before the tournament where the winning player hosts dinner for previous champions. It is a tradition that was started in 1952 by Ben Hogan.
