Maggie Dixon Classic is a mini basketball tournament that is held every year at Madison Square Garden since 2006. Every winter, hundreds of fans attend the games and gather to take part in the exciting matches that take place between the best teams of college basketball. If you want to relive the excitement experienced during college sports events, getting Maggie Dixon Classic tickets would be a good way to go about it.
The tournament is named after Margaret Mary "Maggie" Dixon, who was a coach for women's college basketball. Her many achievements during her short career that was ended by her unexpected death, earned her a lot of respect. She was hired by the US Military Academy at West Point just eleven days before the 2005-2006 season was about to take off. That year saw her surprising everyone by leading the team to a win in the Patriot League tournament, which automatically qualified the team to take part in the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament. Although her team lost, the fact that this marked the first time any Army basketball team made an appearance on a NCAA tournament, cemented her name in basketball history. Jamie Dixon, her elder brother is head coach for the men's basketball team at the University of Pittsburgh and in 2006, he and Maggie became the first sister-brother pair to lead teams at a NCAA tournament, the same season.
Born in 1977 in North Hollywood, California, Maggie Dixon started playing basketball at her high school, carrying on the passion to her college days. She was a part of the women's team at the University of San Diego and graduated from there in the year 1999, with a bachelor's degree in history. She led the team as captain in her final year and was given the title of the "Most Improved Player". After her tryout for the western conference team "Los Angeles Sparks" of the Women's National Basketball Association didn't pan out, she was urged by her elder brother to take up coaching as a career. Following that, she got the job to coach the team at DePaul University from 2001 to 2005.
Maggie Dixon Classic tournament is a tribute to the young coach, named after her when she died unexpectedly at the age of just twenty eight. The Army paid her homage by having her burial at the West Point Cemetery. Her life remains a source of inspiration to many basketball fans out there.
Her death crept up on her without warning. When her team gave out in the first round of the 2006 NCAA season, she went on to attend the Final Four for men in Indianapolis. Following that, she travelled to Boston to witness the women's Final Four. After attending a Nike party there alongside Dour Bruno, the WBCA president and several other coaches. She returned to West Point the following day and the day after that, simply collapsed. She was taken to the base hospital at first and later airlifted to the nearby Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York but could not be saved. The autopsy results revealed "arrhythmia" due to an enlarged heart as the cause of death.
To honor the coach who turned around the military's team, West Point held the first Annual Maggie Dixon Classic in November 2006. Both men's and women's games were televised nationally by the ESPNU. The 2007-2008 season saw the Classic moving to Madison Square Garden, which has been its home ever since. The Maggie Dixon Classic also features fundraising for the research for heart arrhythmia as well as a Health Fair, where free information and screen booths are provided.
