All About the Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams started out as a pro football franchise in Cleveland in 1936. The then "Cleveland Rams" made their debut in the old American Football League (AFL) that year before switching to the rival National Football League (NFL) twelve months later.
They had a tough first decade on the field, failing to make the playoffs until 1945. However, the Rams' fortunes changed that year when they went all the way to lift the NFL Championship in their very first postseason appearance.
Following their maiden league crown, the Rams relocated to Los Angeles. To date, they remain the only NFL champions to have played the following season in a different city. The Big Orange continued to be their home for the next half a century.
Another championship win came in 1951 before the team became a part of the new NFL's National Football Conference (NFC) West Division following the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Apart from their league triumphs, the Rams also won 3 Conference titles and 5 Division crowns during the pre-merger era.
Post-Merger Record
After the big 1970 merger, the Rams became perennial playoff contenders. Until 1994, they had only missed out on the postseason a few times. Their maiden Super Bowl appearance also came during this period. At the end of the 1994-1995 NFL campaign, the Rams were on the move again. This time, they settled in St. Louis.
The Gateway to the West would be their home for the next two decades. This period also brought a fair bit of success for the team. In 1999, under the able stewardship of Dick Vermeil, the Rams won their first Super Bowl after getting the better of the Tennessee Titans.
Return to Hollywood
In 2015, the Rams returned to Los Angeles after twenty eventful years in St. Louis. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum has been their home since. However, a new home arena known as the SoFi Stadium is under construction. It is expected to see the light of day in 2020.
Following the move back to LA, the Rams appointed young Sean McVay as head coach in 2017. And the fledgling tactician took the Rams to the Super Bowl in only his second season at the helm. He will be looking to do so again this year.
Accomplishments
The Rams have appeared in the Super Bowl on four occasions. Other than their triumph in the big game in 1999, they have won 7 Conference titles and 20 Division championships. Before the big merger in 1970, they were NFL champions twice. The ongoing campaign presents another opportunity for the Rams to add to their impressive trophy collection. And you can follow their journey by getting Los Angeles Rams tickets.
