Idaho Steelheads Tickets

Date & Time

We feel our new identity communicates the continued professional approach we employ on game nights, while also reflecting our love for Boise, Idaho as our hometown. said General Manager, Eric Trapp.

The Idaho Steelheads are a minor league ice hockey team in Boise, Idaho. The team was founded by Diamond Sports Management in 1996, headed by Cord Pereira. They were originally part of the West Coast Hockey League, but survived the jump from the WCHL to the East Coast Hockey League in 2003 after the ECHL absorbed the league. Since the 2005-06 season the Steelheads have been affiliates of the NHL Dallas Stars and the AHL Iowa Stars. Home games are played at the 5,000-seat Qwest Arena in downtown Boise.

The Steelheads began play as a WCHL expansion team in 1997. The team reached the league finals in 2001 and 2002, but was defeated by the San Diego Gulls and Fresno Falcons, respectively. The Steelheads play in the West Division of the ECHL's National Conference. The Steelheads won the 2004 Kelly Cup in their first season in the ECHL, defeating the Florida Everblades in the Kelly Cup Finals. The Steelheads hosted the 2007 ECHL All-Star Game in Boise.

On May 15, 2007, the Steelheads advanced to the Kelly Cup Finals by defeating the Alaska Aces 3-2 in game 5 of the ECHL National Conference Finals.

Before defeating the Alaska Aces four games to one in the National Conference Finals to reach the Kelly Cup Finals, Idaho beat both the Stockton Thunder and Las Vegas Wranglers four games to two in the 2007 ECHL National Conference Quarter Final and Semi Final rounds, respectively.

During the 2006-07 regular season, the Las Vegas Wranglers (106 points) and the Alaska Aces (105 points) finished with the 1st and 2nd most points in the league, respectively. In defeating both the Las Vegas Wranglers and the Alaska Aces in the 2007 Kelly Cup Playoffs, the Steelheads (90 points) defeated the top two teams in the league on their way to the Kelly Cup Finals.

On May 31, 2007 the Steelheads won their second Kelly Cup championship by defeating the Dayton Bombers four games to one. The Idaho Steelheads became the fourth team to win multiple ECHL championships joining the Toledo Storm, the Hampton Roads Admirals and the South Carolina Stingrays.

Ten years ago, Idahos professional hockey team was officially named the Idaho Steelheads. The process to name Idahos newest professional sports franchise began in the spring of 1996 with the Pepsi Name The Team Sweepstakes that gave consumers throughout Southern Idaho the chance to vote for their favorite team name. The original 25,000 entry blank were quickly consumed forcing a second printing to meet the tremendous demand. Season ticket holders were then given the opportunity to make the final decision between Steelheads and Ice Hawks in the Pepsi Final Vote.

The original Steelheads logo was designed by Blake Thorton from Hailey, Idaho. Thortons winning logo was chosen following a contest that featured the top graphic artists in the state of Idaho. Thortons design was named logo of the Year in 1998 in on line voting by hockey fans at the In The Crease online magazine website. The voting began with logos from every team in professional hockey, including the National Hockey League, and was narrowed to 20 finalists, the top two teams from each league and four wild card entrants. The Steelheads finished second in the Logo of the Year contest in 1999 behind the Bakersfield Condors, who are also a member of the ECHL.

The Steelheads are named for a species of seagoing rainbow trout native to Idaho streams and rivers and popular with local anglers. The fish was a secondary element in the team's original logo, which was in use through the 2005-06 season. The current Steelheads logo, however, does not include a fish. Instead, it consists of a mountain scene with the word mark, but the fish is in Idaho's alternate logo.

The Idaho Steelheads are proud of the hockey culture that has grown over the past ten years. The Steelheads have a rich history of success stories on and off the ice, and are thrilled to unveil the new look of professional hockey in Idaho.

As residents of this community, both the Steelheads front office and the players themselves love Idaho. In face, year after year more Steelheads players decide to make Idaho their permanent home. Perhaps its because of Boises bustling downtown scene or Idahos breath-taking natural beauty. Maybe its because of the thousands of friendly fans who welcome them to this neck of the woods.

The Steelheads new identity captures the spirit of Idaho, while also communicating the fast, fierce nature of Steelheads hockey. The new color combination of blue, black and silver reflects the steelheads intense approach to this physical game. The primary logo features Idahos jagged mountain peaks, timbered forests and puck swooshing down a river of motion. The secondary logo focuses on the hardest fighting fresh water fishthe steelhead.

Since the early days in the former West Coast Hockey League, the Steelheads have always been highly regarded as a top-notch, professional sports team. Today, as members of the premier AA minor hockey league-the ECHL, the Steelheads have continued to bolster their major league reputation.

The Steelheads marketing partners of the past nine years, MMG of Boise, were retained to execute the rebranding campaign after an extensive RFP process, which evaluated advertising agencies and graphic designers from across the country.

The main goal even before our inaugural season was to be a first class organization on and off the ice, said General Manager, Eric Trapp.

MMG has an in depth understanding of our history, as well as our vision for the future, said Trapp. We were in search of a team who could tackle every aspect of a project of this nature, not just a logo redesign.
